Dear NHL,
Next time you have a super competitive game without penalties on National TV, tell the referees to keep their whistles away at both ends of the ice. It was really nice to watch the game and I cannot believe still that a penalty for tripping was called on Timonen for diving at the puck and knocking a player down in front of his own net. Then a call is made for a player diving at and hitting the puck before the skates. Finally, when Hartnell has the puck in the crease and an empty net, Chara is allowed to tackle him linebacker-style without a call. What a crappy series of calls made by a referee that lives in Boston? That doesn’t look too weird does it? Also what was the timeout in the game to play Sweet Caroline? I didn’t know that teams can take 3 minute timeouts to pump up the crowd? Oh by the way Overtime is to be played 4 on 4. That means that when the home team breaks out with 3 forwards and 2 defensemen still on the ice, they have too many men on the ice. During the last rush up ice, the Bruins CLEARLY had too many men on the ice.
Nice job ruining the effort of all players on the ice, just to make the home-town crowd happy. I guess when you charge the ridiculous amounts for ticket prices, you better let the home team have extra chances to win. The referees took the efforts of both goalies and threw them away by making such crazy calls. Up until the last 4:30 of the game, the players were allowed to hit, clear the crease, and play the puck along the wall.
Signed,
A fan that will not support upcoming Winter Classic events.
Game notes:
Tim Thomas and Michael Leighton both played spectacular hockey all afternoon, too bad that the men in stripes felt the itch to start calling dumb penalties. The Flyers forwards played great and generated many chances with great looks, but Thomas played out of his mind. If he would have played hockey instead of attacking Hartnell (a-la Slapshot) the game would have been 0-0 going to the end. The Flyers forwards dominated the game and exposed Boston badly all over the rink.
Quote from Timonen:“I was on the ground and he stepped on my leg and fell down,” Timonen said. “If you call that tripping, that’s tripping. That’s kinda weak to me.”
More from the Players:“One extra man? There were three extra men,” Timonen remarked. “If you can’t see that, there’s nothing we can do. That’s way too many men on the ice … They had time to make a call [and reverse a goal].”
totally agree on kimmos penalty, not so much on brieres. dmen w/ charas rep always get away w/ that crap(including pronger) and the lesser knowns get it called. that has been an issue as long as ive followed hockey.
chill...
glad I can't be bothered to watch this farce. Just a chance for Gary B to pat himself on the back for another less then mediocre job done.
I was gonna watch this game but then decided to watch Sherlok Holmes instead which was an excellent movie. Im just hoping that the net WC is in Calgary as it is rumoured to be.
This game was disgusting to watch, but I really figured it'd play out like that. You need the home team to win in these big game scenarios
You need the home team to win in these big game scenarios... Are you all brain dead, that was the first time the home team won in the winter classic, if you're going to complain (and by all means go ahead) at least attempt to do so with some form of intelligence. If you really think that those calls were made intentionally you need to watch the plethora of other games that have been ruined this year by the refs.
