Great game. Flyers outplayed the Habs for the 45 minutes of the game. Then the penalty on Hatcher gave the Habs life. I thought the call was correct on Hatcher but there should have been on Boullion for hitting Umberger on the knee/thigh with his hip prior to the hit OR fighting with Hatcher after the hit. It should have been 5 on Hatcher and 2 on Boullion.
Once again, Carter, Umberger and Upshall were incredible. Carter and Umberger are going to get some contracts this summer after the playoffs they are putting up after nice solid seasons.
Jason Smith was much more of a factor in the game tonight. He must be healing up whatever was ailing him. Also after Hatcher got the boot. Kapenen took a shift with Kukkunen (when Lasse had the bad call).
But the referees were awful again. How the game starts 5 on 3 was ridiculous! They couldn't even replay the penalties on TV. Then in the 3rd period, two players get tangled on the boards with the Habs player's arms around Kuukonen and they call 2 to Lasse for falling down. Biron was hit many times tonight and no penalties called. The refs are really favoring the calls towards the Canadians. It is not a new secret that the Flyers never get a call. They have to win this on their own and cannot expect a call when down, but sure can expect to be called for anything when ahead. I know the calls are bad when they don't even bother to show the penalty on replay!
I like the way this game got tight. That may sound crazy but if it was a blowout, then the Flyers would have thought that they have this. Now they know that they have very little margin for error and need to outwork the Habs consistently.
Up 2-1 now. Go Flyers. Keep fighting. I thought the Flyers bench was cool at the end as the players waved the puck from the zone.
Final note - saw this on Comcast site. In response to a Washington Post column that described Flyers fans as "women and children could be security for Megedeth," lead singer Dave Mustaine sent a videotaped message of support. He wore Jason Smith's sweater. Funny touch by the band and Flyers.
I agree about umberger...it's not right to go after a players recent injury. And that 5 on 3...I loved how they couldn't even find the plays to show us...what exactly happened? Frustrating but they played through it.The PK looked much better this game but I wish we didn't have to use it so much. This was the best game they played so far but I'd still say they can play better and they did last round. Let's bring it back...
Not only was the 5-3 ridiculous, but even worse was Vs. Joe Benihana didn't realize it was a 5 on 3 for almost 1:30 of the penalty. Thank God the rest of the games will be on Comcast
Officiating in favor of the Canadiens? Are you even watching the games? Richards with a cheap little Bobby Clarke punch to Halak's head in the 3rd..... get real!
The call you refer to, the hip on Umberger-was Thomas Plekanec. Boullion was busy skating out front to hit Hatcher in the back with a cross check.
Viper, take off your bleu, blanc et rouge glasses and actually watch the game. If that's the best you can find that wasn't called against the Flyers, then you have absolutely no complaints
The calls were 9-5 in favor of the Habs. I would agree that some calls have gone to non calls. But, when the Habs have needed a call they got one. Either way the officiating has been awful (in general).
the Flyers should consider themselves lucky that they aren't getting the calls for all the interference that they get away with. The refs have clearly forgotten the reg. season rules
Luck has nothing to do with it. We've had less shots but better aim, better goaltending. We've also had to kill of more penalties. And there's nothign lucky about losing game one to a last minute "penalty" call and a broken faceoff stick.wake up habs. Get over your sense of entitlement. You are being handed these games and you don't take the opportunities you're given. As far as the love tap on halak, it's payback for Price's dive (DIVE- check the youtube slow motion replay). And it's not like Biron wasn't bumped around behind the net a few times. Get over it.
sm623181 I thought for a second you might have something intelligent to same but..I was wrong. Game one you got 2 goals. 1 we put in and the 2nd off a leg (Hardly you capitalizing on anything) Sense of intitlement? You must not follow the game at all. We haven't won a cup since 93 and furthermore have had very little playoff appearances over that time frame. Your right we haven't taken care of the chances we have had, and you should thank your lucky stars. Because when we do start to capitalize on the chances it's all over for the Flyers. For the most part you have been out played.
habs12 -- You probably shouldn't bother with commenting. For many Flyers fans, their team has never committed a penalty while the opposition is full of divers, etc. Interestingly, I heard the 1st two periods of last nights game on the Flyers radio network (XM) and even their announcers like to throw around the "diving" accusations, completely ignoring the fact that their own players (Upshall and the like) are some of the biggest floppers that I have seen. What was the deal with Umberger -- he was barely touched and fell on the ice like he had been shot (eerily similar to Hartnell late in Game 7 of the Caps series).
Umberger has a knee injury (probably a tear of some kind and needs surgery). His knee was forced back like hyper-extended by the hip on his upper thigh area. It is very painful, and the pain makes the entire leg go numb. The brace that he is wearing saved the injury from getting worse, and he still returned to the game. You gotta love the passion and pain tolerance of all hockey players!
The refs suck both ways, deal with it.
habs12...luck still has nothing to do with it and what about what i said wasn't intellegent. Last time I checked writing a well thought out opinion is okay. As for your sense of entitlement, I think you just proved it right there. So when will you start capitalizing? Are they just lulling the Flyers into a false sense of security. The Flyers have yet to play their best hockey. As far as diving. Upshall has been known to do it from time to time but it's irrelevent b/c he didn't last night. He was too busy scoring.
also...insulting my intellegence won't make your Habs win...tone down the blog agression.
I think hab fans are funny. Their team gets away with murder on the ice and these clowns still complain about reffing. Maybe complaining and blaming everyone else is a French thing after all? They've had 13 power plays the last 2 games. 5 for the Flyers. Montreal fans should shut their mouths and pray the refs don't read this crap.
There is a reason the penalties are 13-5...... it is after all Bobby Clarke's teamm... enuff said
Hey archion113, 1st I'm not french, I'm from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. Which I'm sure you have no idea where it is. I must have missed the murder we got away with. In any case as far as actual power play time goes it is actually as follows Mont-20:36 Phil- 12:22 a difference of 8:14 over the 3 games played. Somewhere in the range of 2.5 minutes per game. Not quite the 8 pp or 16min that you suggest.
when you're talking the leagues top 2 power plays 2.5 minutes matter.
It may matter but it has little to do with what he was reciting as fact
sm623181 as for luck having nothing to do with it ( as you said earlier) Its bad luck when you hit 3 posts or crossbars per game.
Viper viper Viper...stop the senseless comments...Holmgren put together this team not Bobby Clarke. Move on, your frustrations are spilling over into your hockey sense.Habs12Luck or no luck....A coach once told me if you a shooter hits his mark, where he wants to shoot, the goalie will have no prayer. so, truly the shooters did not hit their mark. Move on!!!
I think the Flyers played a great game.Hatcher's penalty didn't really hurt his team because they won.Hopefully the intensity is still there for game 4.
hey phi1671 would you like some cheese with your whine?
