Let the excitement begin now for an event next year. As many now, the NHL is bringing back the World Cup of Hockey next year in Toronto. Today, the league announced training camp sessions and pre-game action prior to the event. Major cities were picked globally to present these activities, including Columbus, Ohio; Washington, DC; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Montréal, Quebec, Canada; Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; Helsinki, Finland; Gothenburg, Sweden; and Prague; Czech Republic.
Columbus is getting the training camps for Team USA and hosting a pre-tournament matchup between Team USA and Team Canada on September 9, 2016. This is significant for the city and its rise as a larger sports market. In 2015, it was the All-Star Game, and now the World Cup (training camp). This helps makes Columbus a more preferable destination for players with the more larger hockey events going on here.
In terms of the team itself, what does this mean for the American born players on Columbus? What does it to the Blue Jackets roster? Will more guys get in? What does it mean for John Tortorella, a guy heavily involved in work with the United States? It may mean nothing; it may mean the world for someone with these events happening in Nationwide Arena.
What are your thoughts on the World Cup? Who should make it for each team? More to come…
