In early January, the Columbus Blue Jackets traded center Ryan Johansen to the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Seth Jones. Jones is a pending RFA at the end of this season, and will be expecting a major raise after two really good seasons with the Nashville Predators.
After seeing and hearing what he did for the Predators against the Blackhawks without Shea Weber says a lot, in that he could become a Norris Trophy candidate or winner one day on his career.
The question is how much the Blue Jackets want to pay him.
They could give him a Ryan Murray type of contact, and see how he performs prior to giving him a long term deal with big money.
They could give him a big contact with big money right away.
They probably do not want him to be like P.K. Subban, where he is underpaid and wins a Norris during a bridge deal, and pay him $9 million a season.
They may want to find a reasonable, a Travis Hamonic style contact, where they pay him big and watch him grow into the contact.
If I was the agent, I would ask six to seven years between five to six million dollars per season. I think he will be that good. By the end he will be 27 or 28 years of age, in time to pay another contact similar to this one.
What are your thoughts on the trade? Who won it? Who could be a long term winner? How much should Seth Jones be paid (money and years)? More to come...
