The home stand continues for the Columbus Blue Jackets as they welcome a different looking Ottawa Senators club. This week, the Senators pulled off a inner-division trade with rival Toronto Maple Leafs where Milan Michalek, Jared Cowen, Colin Grenning, Tobias Lindberg, and a 2017 2nd round pick were moved for captain Dion Phaneuf, Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert, and Cody Donaghey.
Michalek reportedly snubbed the trade on Monday night, but after convincing by head coach Mike Babcock and GM Lou Lamerillo, he accepted going to the Leafs. The winger was a former first round pick (9th overall) by the San Jose Sharks in 2003. He was moved to Ottawa with Jonathan Chechoo and a 2nd round pick for Danny Heatley. Michalek is the only player in the trade still in the NHL. Due to injuries, he is currently on the Leafs' IR. He is currently being paid $4 million.
Grenning has been in the AHL for the past couple of seasons after falling out of favor with the management in Ottawa. He gets paid $2.65 million. The winger was an All Star participant for fastest skater a couple seasonas ago, but fell short to current Penguins forward Carl Hagelin. Greening is now playing with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL.
Jared Cowen was a former first round pick in 2009, and due to injuries, has not become the defenseman he was expected to be. The bottom paring defenseman admitted to asking a trade out of Ottawa earlier in the season, and got it in this deal. He currently gets paid $3.1 million.
Tobias Lindberg was a former 2nd round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He apparently has more points than top prospects including Anthony Mantha, Sonny Milano, and Michael McCarron. He is now playing for the Toronto Marlies in the AHL.
Dion Phaneuf was drafted 6th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. The former Red Deer Rebel has been rumored to be on the outs of the capital of the hockey world since signing this monster contract (7 years by $7 million). He was traded from Calgary to Toronto in a trade similar to this one, but the major player the Leafs moved was Matt Stajan. Phaneuf is a second paring defenseman, and is expected to play alongside Cody Ceci, for now.
Matt Frattin is a name Blue Jackets fans used to know. He was a drafted Maple Leafs, and moved alongside Ben Scrivens and a 2nd round pick for Jonathan Bernier. Frattin was than traded with that pick and a third round pick to Columbus for Marian Gaborik. The second round pick was moved back to Toronto with a third round pick for a first round pick. The first round pick Columbus got was Gabriel Carlsson at 29th overall. The second round was Travis Dermott at 34th overall. Frattin was moved back Toronto in the summer before for Jerry D'Miggo. The young winger was then moved to Buffalo for Luke Adam. After not qualifying him to an offer, he became a UFA and signed with ex-Jacket Brian Gibbons to the New York Rangers. Frattin will report to the Binghamton Senators of the AHL
Casey Bailey signed a two year entry level deal with the Maple Leafs as a collegiate UFA. He graduated from Penn State, and played a couple games in a Leafs jersey near the end of the 2014-15 season. He has played with the Marlies all year, and will report to Binghamton.
Ryan Rupert was a former 6th round pick in 2011. Cody Dongahey was a former late round pick as well. Both will report to the minor leagues.
For the Blue Jackets tonight, they have a resigned Ryan Murray in the lineup and have activated David Savard off the injured reserve. What does this mean for the lineups tonight? It may be the last of Fedor Tyutin, who I heard linked to Ottawa prior to the Phaneuf trade. It could mean we see one or both of Cody Goloubef and Justin Falk waived/assigned to the Lake Erie Monsters.
Speaking of the Mosnters, they scored three short handed goals in the final minute of the third period during Thursday night's game against the Chicago Wolves (St. Louis Blues minor team).
For the Senators, former Ohio State Buckeye, Ryan Dzingel, returns to the Buckeye State to play the Blue Jackets. In five career NHL games, the young winger has two assists.

Players to Watch
Columbus: Jack Johnson. After his name recently coming up in trade rumors, which I don't believe needs to perform to get the attention of his management and others. He is a good offensive defenseman, ask Pittsburgh. He leads all Jackets defensemen in points, and could add on to it. Boston is another team I heard lately.
Ottawa: Mike Hoffman. He is a good sniper that has taking a lot of strides since breaking out of the AHL, and is now one of the league's leading goal scorers with 24. He could add on to it because of the young defenseman the Blue Jackets have.
What are your thoughts on the Phaneuf trade? Who won the trade?
Enjoy the games tonight. More to come…
