The United States defeat Canada in Nationwide Arena in the first preliminary games of the tournament. The final score was 4-2.
Zach Parise, Team USA and Minnesota Wild alternate captain, score the first goal of the game. (1-0)
Patrick Kane, the reigning Hart Trophy winner of the Chicago Blackhawks, made it 2-0.
Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins scored the first goal for the Canadians. (2-1)
Joe Pavelski, the captain of Team USA and the San Jose Sharks, made it 3-1 on a rebound shot from Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson.
Drew Doughty, the reigning Norris Trophy winner from the Los Angelese Kings, made it 3-2.
Derek Stepan of the New York Rangers scored an empty netter to make it 4-2.
The US had Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings play in the first two period; and Ben Bishop of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the third.
The Canadians had Carey Price in all game long.
What does this win mean for the States?
Do they begin to feel overly confident and feel like the favorites after one game? Or well the veteran leadership and coaching keep them together. Or does their feistiness show they can't be messed with?
What does this loss mean for the Canadiens?
Do they look to Braden Holtby as their number one? Do they jumble up the lines? How will revenge come out against the States and other opponents? Will the star players play like stars?
One side note, the crowd in Columbus plus the cannon going off were fantastic to see and hear.
Also, nothing beats a right deltoid save.
