With the preliminary matchups wrapping up in the World Cup of Hockey, not much has been discussed about Team USA besides head coach John Tortorella and his methods.
First, he asked a question in regards to an issue that occurred in another sport- about the controversy of the National Anthem. His response- he "would bench anyone who sits during the anthem." This call for nationalistic pride is close to his heart as his son as an American soldier. Good for him and his family and the service they have done. It helped the hockey by letting them focus on themselves.
On XM radio earlier this week, I heard comments saying he isn't a winning coach anymore and his ways have gone by the wayside. Tortorella is the winnningest coach in US Hockey history. He knows what he is doing. He won the Stanley Cup before. One of his ways is shot blocking and physical grit. Torts and USA general manager Dean Lombardi constructed this roster to be for fitting for the coach's strength. Tough guys in Dustin Byfulgien; Justin Abdelkader; Kyle Palmieri; Ryan Kesler; and David Backes; and guys from his own team and former teams that know his system in Derek Stepan; Brandon Dubinsky; and Jack Johnson.
The other thing he does is get under the skin of his players and usually gets an answer. Recently, it has been occurring to Montreal Canadiens captain Max Paccioretty. In the USA game last night, he responded which helped his team defeat Finland.
Tortorella being unafraid of the media has helped his team focus on himself, and this team could have the same underrated feel to it as it did back in 1980.
What are your thoughts on Tortorella?
More to come…
