The Columbus Blue Jackets suffered a loss in their home opener to the Boston Bruins, being doubled up by the final score of 6-3.
The Bruins' top line was superior as they had all six goals for their squad.
David Pasternak opened the scoring for his team in the second period, with Brad Marchand getting the lone assist; and scoring on the empty netter in the final minute of the game; David Krejci and Ryan Spooner had the assists.
David Backes scored the second and third goals to his team. The first one came early in the second; Zdeno Chara and Brad Marchand had the assists. The second goal was a Backes deflection; Pastrnak and Marchand had the assists.
Brad Marchand the game winner and the extra tally in the third to separate the Bruins from the Blue Jackets. The game winner had assists from Backes and Pastrnak. The second goal was assisted by rookie Brandon Carlo, who earned his first NHL point.
Tukka Rask was the goalie for the Bruins, allowing 3 goals on 31 shots faced for a 0.903 save percentage. Overall, he got better as the game went. Rask probably wants to get rid of the first period.
Going with the first period, the Blue Jackets had a good start to the game, scoring the first two goals.
Alex Wennberg had the opening goal on a floater over Rask's glove; Seth Jones and rookie Zach Werenski got the assists.
Late in the first, Cam Atkinson scored a powerplay goal all set up by created space from rookie Zach Werenski; Alex Wennberg and Nick Foligno had the tic tac toe passes for the assists.
In the second period, Seth Jones beat Tukka Rask up high; Brandon Saad and Nick Foligno had the assists.
Sergei Bobrovsky was the starting goalie for the Blue Jackets, allowing 5 goals on 36 shots faced for a 0.861 save percentage (86.1%).
CBJ Three Stars of the Night
1. Seth Jones- goal (1), assist (1)
2. Cam Atkinson- PPG (1)
3. Zach Werenski- assist (1)
Other Notes:
1. These two teams continue to prove to me that these teams are an underrated rivalry in the NHL. With the ex-Blue in David Backes stirring the pot last night, things could get really intense later in the season.
2. Zach Werenski was all around impressive in his NHL debut. He had a helper is a quarterback on the powerplay.
3. Ryan Murray suffered an apparent foot injury; and Scott Harrington was sent to the minors for conditioning. What this means is more ice time for Dalton Prout and Jack Johnson.
More to come…
