That seems like common sense doesn't it? After riding high on the 16 game winning streak, the Blue Jackets have lost their past two games.
CBJ Post-Game No. 37- Shutout
The Blue Jackets winning streak ended on Thursday night to the Washington Capitals by the final score of 5-0.
Daniel Winnik opened the scoring in the first period of a rebound attempt that beat Sergei Bobrovsky upstairs. The goal was his sixth of the season. Jay Beagle and Nate Schmidt had the assists.
Off an odd man rush, Marcus Johansson passed the puck over to John Carlson, and it went off his skate and past Bobs for the 2-0 lead. Carlson's goal was his fifth tally of the campaign; Evgeny Kuznetsov had the secondary assist.
Midway through the secondary period, all three Capitals forwards were cycling down low. Oshie was blocking out a Jacket winger; and Nicolas Backstrom got the puck to Alex Ovechkin, who passed it to Nate Schmidt at the blue line. His first attempt was blocked by Boone Jenner, and the rebound got past Bobrovsky's glove side for a 3-0 lead. The goal was Schmidt's first of the season.
Later in the second, a lousy turnover by Brandon Dubinsky was capitalized by a John Carlson pass to Andre Burakovsky. Burakaovsky's shot got in between Bobrovsky's legs for the 4-0 lead. Burakovsky's goal was his fifth of the season.
In the third period, Justin Williams got out of the left wing boards and beat Bobrovsky up high for a 5-0 lead. Williams' goal was his 11th of the season. Kuznetsov had an assist.
CBJ Post Game No. 38- Comeback Loss in Columbus
The start of the back of back starts off with a loss to the New York Rangers. The final score was 5-4 in regulation.
The Jackets opened the scoring with less than two minutes in by rookie defenseman Markus Nutivarra. The Finnish defender's goal was his second of the season. Josh Anderson had the assist.
Minutes later, the Blue Jackets' number one ranked power play went to work on Henrik Lundqvist for a 2-0 lead. Nick Foligno got the pass to Sam Gagner, who laterally passed it to Cam Atkinson, and the cannon fired for the goal. Atkinson's goal was his team leading 19th goal of the season.
In the latter stages of the first, Oscar Lindberg was able to get in the zone and beat Curtis McElhinney upstairs for a 2-1 Columbus lead. Lindberg's goal was his first of the season. Michael Grabner and Nick Holden had the assists.
The Jackets quickly responded with a goal from Scott Hartnell. Scotty's goal was his 10th of the season. Gagner had the lone assist.
In the early stages of the second period, Lukas Sedlak roared into the zone and beat the King down low for a 4-1 lead. Sedlak's goal was his fourth of the season. Hartnell and Jack Johnson had the assists.
Michael Grabner broke out of the zone on a breakaway, and beat McElhinney up high for a 4-2 lead. His goal was his 17th of the season.
The Rangers' power play went to work in the early stages of the third period. Adam Clendening was able to get the puck up high on the blocker side, for his first goal of the season. JT Miller and Kevin Hayes had the assists.
Midway through the third, Clendening pinched in from the point and best McElhinney for his second of the game and of the season to tie the game at 4-4. Lindberg and Jesper Fast had the assists.
With 16.5 seconds remaining in the game, Michael Grabner converted off a Seth Jones turnover, and deked out McElhinney to win the game 5-4. Grabner's goal was his 18th of the season.
CBJ Pre Game No. 39- V. Philadelphia Flyers
Tonight, the Blue Jackets take on the Philadelphia Flyers in the second of back to back match ups for both teams.
The Flyers beat the Lightning yesterday, and the Jackets lost to the Rangers.
This is their first meeting of the season. Last season, the Flyers made it to the playoffs, and lost to the Capitals in six games.
The Flyers were able to continue their youth movement while continuing to battle for the post season. The Flyers bought out RJ Umberger; let Sam Gagner (CBJ); Ryan White (ARI); and Evgeny Medvedev (KHL) go to the open market; and Tim Brent retired. They added Boyd Gordon; Dale Weise; Roman Lyubimov; and TJ Brennan. The Flyers were also able to integrate both their 2015 first round picks in the lineup in Travis Konecny and Ivan Provorov.
