The New York Rangers hold on to defeat the Blue Jackets by the narrow margin of 3-2 in regulation.
In the first period, the Blue Jackets' power play went to work. Brandon Saad found Brandon Dubinsky, and he beat Antti Raanta down below the shoulder to fire the cannon. Dubinsky's goal was his eighth this season. Seth Jones and Brandon Saad were credited with the assists.
The Rangers came out of the first intermission with vengeance. With just 12 seconds off the clock, Dan Girardi evened the game with his fourth goal of the year. Kevin Hayes and J.T. Miller had the assists.
In the third, both teams went back and forth scoring goals, but one team scored more than the other.
Jack Johnson turned the puck over off a pass he attempted to David Savard. Kevin Hayes recovered the puck and beat Sergei Bobrovsky on a clean breakaway for his 15th goal of the season.
Nick Foligno's effort behind the net set up was good enough for a redirection of a Ranger defender to beat Raanta for his 19th goal of the season. The returning David Savard also had an assist on the play.
The rookie Jimmy Vessey beat Bobrovsky on a rising shot over his shoulder for the eventual game winning goal. The Harvard student got his 13th goal of the year. Derek Stepan and former Blue Jackets defenseman Nick Holden had the assists.
Brandon Dubinsky was my player to watch as he was former Rangers' draft pick. Dubi was part of the organization from his draft year in 2006 until the blockbuster of the summer in 2012. That was quite the deal then. And last night, he scored the first goal of the game against his former team.
Rick Nash was my player to watch for the New York Rangers as he the Blue Jackets' only number one overall draft pick in franchise history. Nash was the main piece of the blockbuster trade years ago. Nash was a +1 with four shots on goal with 17:53 in ice time.
Antti Raanta stopped 30 of 32 Columbus shots for a 0.938 save percentage (93.8%).
Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 20 of 23 shots for a 0.870 save percentage (87%).
CBJ Three Stars of the Night

Quick Thoughts on the National Coverage.
It was nice to see Pierre McGuire help out in Columbus. He's quite the recognizable commentator that is loaded with the insight I feel necessary to help recognize a smaller market club.
The Nick Foligno story about his father and former NHL veteran Mike Foligno was nice to see in between the intermissions.
The coverage of the cannon was overblown by my standards but for the national audience it makes sense to enlighten them.
Having Jeremey Roenick was nice to see too in the booth. Having more Stars talk about the Jackets is nice to see and hear as they are right in the thick of things.
More to come…
