CBJ Update: New York and New Addition

The Columbus Blue Jackets continue their success of a bye week with back to back wins against the two New York teams.

CBJ Post-Game No. 59—Shutout Blowout

The Columbus Blue Jackets shut out the New York Islanders by the final score of 7-0.

The Jackets got three goals in the first period. Jack Johnson opened the scoring
with his third goal of the season. David Savard and Markus Hannikanen had the assists. Boone Jenner scored the second goal of the game with his 12th goal of the season. Cam Atkinson and Brandon Dubinsky had the assists. Nick Foligno had the third goal of the game with his 21st goal of the season. Alex Wennberg and Brandon Saad (my CBJ player to watch) had the assists.

In the second period, Josh Anderson scored two goals in the second period. Anderson’s first goal was credited with his 12th goal of the season. Boone Jenner and William Karlsson had the assists. The second of the game was credited for his 13th goal of the season; the goal was unassisted.

In the final frame, Nick Foligno scored his second of the game for his 22nd goal of the season. The captain’s goal was assisted by David Savard and Alex Wennberg had the assists. David Savard scored the final goal of the game, which is good enough for his third goal of the season. Sam Gagner and Brandon Saad has the assists.

Andrew Ladd was my player to watch for the New York Islanders. The veteran winger had a 16:22 in ice time, with five shots on goal and two hits. On the contrary, he was credited with a giveaway and was a minus -2 on the night.

Brandon Saad my player to watch for the Columbus Blue Jackets, and he was credited with two assists while playing on the fourth line. Saad was a plus +2 on the night with one shot on goal with 17:05 in ice time.

Thomas Greiss was the starting goalie in the first period, and he stopped 14 of 17 shots in the first period with a 0.824 save percentage (82.4%). Jean-Francois Berube played the other two period for the Islanders, allowing four goals on 28 shots faced for a 0.857 save percentage (85.7%).

Joonas Korpisalo stopped all 24 shots for his first career NHL shutout (100%).

CBJ Post-Game No. 60—Divisional Supremacy

The Columbus Blue Jackets hold on to defeat the New York Rangers by the final score of 5-2.

Alex Wennberg opened the scoring with a minute into the first period. Wennberg’s goal was his 11th goal of the season. David Savard and Oliver Bjorkstrand had the assists.

After a lengthy review that stood, Rick Nash evened the game with his 18th goal of the season. Nash’s goal was a clean goal that beat Bobs upstairs on the trapper side. Jimmy Vesey and Derek Stepan had the assists.

Cam Atkinson extended the lead off a power play goal. The goal was his 28th goal of the season. Sam Gagner and Zach Werenski had the assists. Alex Wennberg extended the Jackets’ lead for his 12th goal of the season. Oliver Bjorkstrand had the lone assist. Cam Atkinson scored his second of the game, good for his 29th goal of the season. Brandon Dubinsky had the lone assist. Josh Anderson scored another goal to extend the leaf to four. Anderson’s goal was his 14th goal of the season. William Karlsson and Scott Hartnell had the assists.

Jesper Fast extended the lead for his fifth goal of the season in the final second of regulation. Brandon Pirri and Marc Staal had the assists.

Hernik Lundqvist stopped 21 of 26 shots for a 0.808 save percentage.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 28 of 30 shots for a 0.933 save percentage.

Also, the Columbus Blue Jackets have claimed winger Zac Dalpe off waivers from the Minnesota Wild. Dalpe was a former second round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Dalpe has also spent a season with the Buffalo Sabres prior to his previous two with the Wild. In 128 career NHL games, Dalpe has 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 career points. Dalpe has an Ohio connection as being a former Ohio State Buckeye. Dalpe is to report to the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League. What does this mean for the Blue Jackets? They add another depth forward to their club for nothing. No loss of draft picks. He is just a low risk rental that can be a hit or miss with the Jackets. I feel he’ll spend more time in the AHL, and will be more of an emergency recall because Sonny Milano is right there.
