CBJ Post-Game No. 61—So Close, But There’s A Price to Pay
The Columbus Blue Jackets sustained an overtime defeat by the hands of the Montreal Canadiens by the final score of 1-0 in overtime.
Last night was the debut for newly acquisition for defenseman Jordie Benn, who they got from the Dallas Stars in a trade for defenseman Greg Pateryn and a 2017 4th round draft pick.
The Habs’ lone goal in the game with a minute and seven seconds remaining in overtime,and the goal scorer was my player to watch to entire game. The goal came from Alex Galchenyuk, who scored his 15th goal of the season. The goal came off the power play. Shea Weber and Max Pacioretty had the assists.
Boone Jenner was my player to watch for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Jenner registered two shots on goal, and blocked four Montreal shots. Jenner also had a physical game with having eight hits and a minor penalty. Jenner also had a giveaway, and had a 67% faceoff percentage. Jenner played 21:12 in ice time, with 1:46 of it being shorthanded.
Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 of 30 shots for a 0.967 save percentage with 63:53 in ice time (96.7%).
Carey Price stopped all 26 shots faced for a 1.000 save percentage (100.0%).
Also, strangely enough, the Habs pulled a trade mid-game with the Edmonton Oilers. They traded center David Desharnais in exchange for defenseman Brandon Davidson. Desharnais is a pending UFA, while Davidson has another year remaining.
Trade Deadline Day.
Today, there were 18 trades on trade deadline day.
The Anaheim Ducks acquired LW Kenton Helgesen and a 7th round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft to the Chicago Blackhawks for LW Spencer Abbott and C Sam Carrick. Carrick and Abbott are former Toronto Maple Leafs, and join former head coaches Randy Caryle and Dallas Eakins in the Anaheim organization.

The Arizona Coyotes traded LW Brendan Ranford to the Colorado Avalanche for RW Joe Whitney. Whitney is veteran forward that has spent his time with the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders prior to his time in the Western Conference. Ranford was a former draft pick of the Flyers, but also spent time with the Dallas Stars.

The Boston Bruins traded a conditional 6th round draft pick to the Winnpieg Jets in exchange for the RW Drew Stafford. Stafford was a former Buffalo Sabre before his time in Winnpieg. Stafford was part of the blockbuster last season involving Tyler Myers and Brenden Leumieux and Joel Armia and Kyle Connor for Evander Kane and Zach Bogosian. Stafford is a pending UFA at the end of the year.

The Calgary Flames traded to D Jyrki Jokipakka and a 2nd round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for RW Curtis Lazar and D Michael Kostka. Jokipakka was a member of the Dallas Stars, and was part of the Kris Russell trade last season. Jokipakka recently cleared waivers, but wound up part of the deal. Curtis Lazar was a first round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, playing up and down between the Ottawa and Binghamton. Michael Kostka is a veteran defenseman of many teams in the NHL, playing with the New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Chicago Blackhawks, and Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Colorado Avalanche traded RW Jarome Iginla to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a conditional 4th round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. Iginla is in the final year of his deal being paid over $5 million dollars. Iggy also played with the Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins, and Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Colorado Avalanche traded D Cody Corbett to the Washington Capitals for G Joe Cannata. Cannata previously played with the Vancouver Canucks prior to his stop in Washington. Corbett has played in Colorado in his entire career. Both players will report to their minor affilates.

The Colorado Avalanche traded LW Andreas Martinsen to the Montreal Canadiens for RW Sven Andrighetto. Martinsen is a pending UFA at the end of the year. Andrighetto is a young prospect that hasn’t been able to make it in Montreal.

The Detroit Red Wings traded LW Thomas Vanek to the Florida Panthers for D Dylan McIlrath and a conditional 3rd round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. The pick is conditional based on if Florida makes the playoffs or not. If they do, they get the Coyotes 3rd round pick. Vanek is a pending UFA at the end of the year. Vanek was a former Buffalo Sabre and a Minnesota Wild. McIlrath was with the Rangers prior to his time Florida.

The Edmonton Oilers traded LW Taylor Beck to the New York Rangers for RW Justin Fontaine. Beck was a former Nashville Predator prospect that also spent time with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Islanders. Fontaine was a former Minnesota Wild before his time with New York.

The Florida Panthers traded G Mike McKenna to the Tampa Bay Lightning for G Adam Wilcox. McKenna has another year remaining on his deal.

The Florida Panthers traded RW Shane Harper to the New Jersey Devils for D Resse Scarlett. Harper was a former Flyer and Islander before his time in Sunrise. Scarlett has been a Devil his entire career.

The Los Angeles Kings traded LW Dwight King to the Montreal Canadiens for a conditional 4th round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. King’s cap room gave way for the Kings to get Iggy.

The New Jersey Devils traded RW Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau to the Nashville Predators for a 6th round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Parenteau is a pending UFA at the end of the season. He has spent his time with the Anaheim Ducks, New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Philadelphia Flyers traded D Mark Striet to the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Tampa Bay Lightning for C Valterri Flippula, a 2017 4th round pick, and a 2017 7th round pick. Striet is a pending UFA at the end of the year, and the Flyers retained 4.7% of his salary. Flippula has $5 million dollar cap hit for another year.

The Pittsburgh Penguins traded RW Eric Fehr, D Steve Olesky, and a 2017 4th round pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs for D Frank Corrado. Fehr is the salary dump. Corrado is a former Canuck before his time with Toronto.

The Tampa Bay Lightning traded D Mark Streit to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 2018 4th round pick. Tampa retained 50% of his salary.

The Columbus Blue Jackets traded D Dillion Heatherington the Dallas Stars for LW Lauri Korposki. Heatherington was struggling to make the NHL squad, being pushed down the system in Cleveland. Heatherington was a second round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Korposki was a former New York Ranger, Edmonton Oiler, and Arizona Coyote before his time in Dallas. Korposki is a pending UFA at the end of the year.

The Columbus Blue Jackets traded D Dalton Prout to the New Jersey Devils for D Kyle Quiency. Quiency is a veteran defenseman that spent his career with the Detroit Red Wings, Colorado Avalanche, and Los Angeles Kings before his time with New Jersey. Quiency is a pending UFA at the end of the year. Dalton Prout has been a career long Blue Jacket before this trade. This is a second chance for Prout.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are back on the ice tonight to take on the Minnesota Wild.
The Wild are the second best team in the league with 88 points, and are continuing their build to the postseason. They acquired C Martin Hanzal and RW Ryan White and a 2017 4th round pick for C Grayson Dowing, a 2017 1st round pick, a 2018 2nd round pick, and a 2019 2nd round pick. The Wild also signed D Mike Weber and RW Ryan Carter. They also traded RW Temmu Pulkinen to the Arizona Coyotes and lost LW Zac Dalpe to waivers to Columbus.
