Tonight is the first contest of the preseason for the Blue Jackets, and tonight they take on the Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo is coming into this season as a younger and stronger team. They made a lot of moves throughout the offseason. They dealt center Ryan O'Reilly to the St. Louis Blues in a blockbuster deal for wingers Patrik Berglund; Vladimir Sobotaka; center Tage Thompson; and a first round pick in 2019. They traded winger Hudson Fasching to the Arizona Coyotes for defenseman Brandon Hickey and winger Mike Sislo, who left as a free agent to the Islanders. They also traded winger Cliff Pu to the Carolina Hurricanes with draft picks in the second, third, and sixth rounds for winger Jeff Skinner. They also dealt a conditional fourth round pick to Pittsburgh for winger Connor Sheary and defenseman Matt Hunwick. They also let the majority of their pending free agents walk: goalies Robin Lehner (NYI) and Chad Johnson (STL); wingers Jordan Nolan (STL), Seth Griffith (WPG), and Benoit Pouliot; center Jacob Josfeson; and defensemen Josh Gorges, Zach Redmond, and Victor Antipin. They added goalies Scott Wedgewood and Carter Hutton through free agency. The Sabres also added defenseman Rasmus Dahlin with the first overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. They adding strength in every position, with their biggest questions being in between the pipes, but also looking for answers from everywhere in terms of the changes and production, especially in the star players on the roster.
