Ottawa Senators forward Zack Smith was placed on, and cleared waivers over the past 24 hours. Smith is a career long Senator: drafted by the club in the third round, 79th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He was part of a team last year that crashed below the Earth's crust, and is offering him to clubs at a lesser value, after going through the waiver wire. Smith was also a contributor during their playoff run to the Eastern Conference Finals two seasons ago. Smith had a career high 25 goals in the 2015-2016 regular season; however, he is a usually double digit goal scorer.
This type of gritty forward fits into the mold of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and the leadership mold with the of the core. Smith's physicality can support the younger guys stepping into the game, getting them the opportunity to play and focus on their skill sets, while also learning how to stand up for themselves. Smith's grit should also remind the youngsters form last season's squad to that of former players Matt Calvert and Gregory Campbell. Smith has shown to be able to score, and to drop the gloves, and it just adds value and offensive depth to a roster in limbo that is looking for offense.
Smith is entering the second year of a four year, $13 million dollar contract. Smith's cap hit is $3.25 million until the 2020-2021 season, with a modified no trade clause, where he can submit a 10 team no trade list.
What is Zach Smith worth? If they retain salary, maybe a 4th round pick, or a C+ prospect and a 7th from this year's draft? Is a third too high, even with 50% salary retention?
