What does it mean when Sutter signs Breen and Cameron as UFA prospects? It means that they are his 1st and 2nd round picks in essence.

Cameron had more goals than any other CHL player, more than Hall, more than Seguin, more than Eberle, more than Beach even more than number 10 on the list, and Flames prospect, Ryan Howse.
Flames fans, Cameron IS our first round pick. He's just a few years more along in terms of development.

With our second round pick you could equate Breen, he's 6'7" and 225 lbs. He's huge. He fills the void left by Aulie.

When Sutter tries to trade for a pick at the Draft, and he will, if he fails he will point out these two kids and say that they already looked at them like their draft.

This is an incredibly deep draft of quality players and actually the third round picks will probably turn out to be decent players. If Kabanov dips low enough in the 2nd round they may make a play for him, Calgary has a long history with Russian players and they know Calgary as a Russian climate type of city. He had massive troubles with Moncton but has that first over all type of skill.

****

As fans we all hope Calgary are buyers at the draft but the reality is that they are sellers, if you want Kotalik gone you have to be willing to say goodbye to a good prospect, a draft pick or a player. They have two or maybe three tradable players that might attract the attention of other G.M.'s looking to take advantage of the Flames' bad salary position.

At the end of the day Calgary needs to shed around 4-8 million in salary, the easiest way is to let go of players like Regehr and Sarich but since Calgary is a seller you have to be prepared that the return for them may not be what you hoped for in terms of hockey players. In the cap age, getting cap room is also one way of winning a trade though and moving Langkow, Regehr, and sarich is one way of doing it.

****

For years we have siphoned Florida and Pheonix for players so why are we so surprised we fail? I'm listening to rumors about Horton now and yeah he's a great player but all of these players that never won anything start to install a losing attitude after a while.

My take on this rumor is that if you look at Florida they need depth at Center and a top 4 d-man. Calgary could provide both so the trade match up works well but Florida will be looking for a pick of some sort as well and Calgary has pocket lint to offer in return.

Newman, Famestr and Vetter are on fire lately with their blogs, it's great being a Flames fan hey? No shortage of opinions here from people who care, I don't always agree with everyone but to name a few that I always appreciate hearing from, beside the aforementioned. are skaspar, flames34, kevinr, allmightcoil, mikk4ervr and more. I've been asked to blog on other sites but the reason I keep writing here is because you guys offer insight other sites don't have.

****

Halak... I think Halak is better than Price right now, 3 years from now? I don't know. The Players going to Montreal suit what they need and they should admire their G.M. for having the courage to bring in some two way guys with size, they need it! maybe not the best deal out there but not a horrible failure it's being made out to be, especially with a glut of starters as UFA's this year.

Have a great weekend!!

I'd prefer to see Calgary keep Regehr. Seems hard to get a good return on veterans these days. His 4 million dollar salary isn't bad when you compare it to Komisarek's 4.5 or Volchenkov's expected 5 million. I could see Sarich being moved.

realstevy-hockeybuzz won't post if your comment is too long sometimes, if it's short it usually comes up.Tough- regehr at 4 mil is a steal compared to some salaries but we have depth on D and simply need the money for a winger.

Good post. Just wondering why you refer to Ryan Howse as a former prospect? He's still owned by Calgary, isn't he?
June 18, 2010 6:13 PM ET | Delete
mcokey_m- You busted me, I was writting former 3rd round pick and finished with prospect giving you former prospect, thanks, edited.

I'm very afraid of the draft... Sutter is going to blow this team to pieces. Reg for a 2nd, Langks for a mediocre prospect and 4th rounder. These are the trades we can look forward to.

I don't buy your reasoning of Cameron being equal to a first round pick. He is 20/21 playing in the OHL, with players who are younger and smaller. I could see that logic if he were playing in the NCAA, but not the OHL/CHL. If he were that good he would have been LA's 1st rounder, not 3rd rounder.
June 18, 2010 8:06 PM ET | Delete
Sane is saying if Sutter cant pull the trigger for a higher draft pick he already can justify it.Ken King believes anything he says. Nothing for Langks

dick for Lanks

Never thought of the earlier signings as early round picks! Makes sense though.Bloggers for the Flames are, ready for it?.......ON FIRE!

id like to see sarich gone and regehr would be tough to part with but we need to give a chance to all our young d-man to make a name for themselves and it would give us another 7.6mil to send minus the cost of the young replacements
June 18, 2010 9:16 PM ET | Delete
Here's why Cameron went unsigned by LA: http://flamesnation.ca/2010/5/2/brock-otten-on-bryan-cameron ... In essence, it's because he plays a big man's game (at least in scoring) but is only 5'10, making a huge obstacle for the NHL. I'll believe he's a replacement for our lost 1st rounder when I see it.

@IggyOnly, "blowing the team to pieces" like that wouldn't really be that bad an idea...although I certainly hope he could get more for Regehr and Langkow than that
June 18, 2010 9:23 PM ET | Delete
Send Sarich, Lagkow and a 4th to Florida for Horton and Tedenby and a 6thThen send Horton and Moss to Anahiem for Bobby Ryan...
June 18, 2010 9:37 PM ET | Delete
I think we need to trade Regehr simply he can get the best return the problem is the only way were going to get a first round is giving up a prospect or two plus regehr.
June 18, 2010 9:38 PM ET | Delete
Problem is, we don't need more prospects as much as we need scoring now
June 18, 2010 9:39 PM ET | Delete
creryk- Yes he's a year older, went in the third because of his size not his ability. Other free agent undrafted signings are giordano and wilson (now with colorado...not bad).
June 18, 2010 9:42 PM ET | Delete
I heard the oilers are trying for horton also. They should trade Souray and Cogs for horton. This would give the oilers there number 1 centerman and this would make it easier for the oilers to draft Hall...
June 18, 2010 9:44 PM ET | Delete
The Flames have always wanted Horton but I not sure that he is the answer.
June 18, 2010 11:03 PM ET | Delete
I remember another little guy no one thought would make it, Theo Fleury. Not bad career. Not much for Regs

Not much for Regs

I don't think Sutter will do much this offseason (compared to other years). I think he's too proud and has to prove to everyone (himself) that he's smarter than them and made great trades
June 19, 2010 12:06 AM ET | Delete
Try it again, not much for Regs
June 19, 2010 12:15 AM ET | Delete
the flames could trade regs and still get by if they didnt get much for him, they have dmen who can do what he does, Regher didnt do anything last year, no hits, no fights, nothing, other teams were not affraid to go in to his corner like in past years. and langkow is just taking up space...bye bye spares
June 19, 2010 12:16 AM ET | Delete
Regher, Labgkow and Stajan to Ottawa for Spezza and Jared Cowan
June 19, 2010 12:37 AM ET | Delete
Brazops5, the first asanine trade proposal I thought maybe you were just some young kid, now it's pretty clear you're just trolling.
June 19, 2010 12:49 AM ET | Delete
The Flames have to many dead contracts and Sutter is paying for his mistakes. Maybe the buyout options should be thought about.

I don't think Sutter will be looking to acquire any draft picks and will probably use the signings of Breen and Cameron to justify having no picks in the first two rounds just as Burke used to Bozak signing to justify trading away his picks for Kessel. Not like it makes much sence in either case though because if we hadn't traded away our first for Joker we would have two supposed first round quality prospects.
June 19, 2010 12:53 PM ET | Delete
Anyways I am expecting Sutter to make some moves at the draft but probably to get a forward that is established in the NHL some one who can help our team now not in the future because Sutter still thinks we are close to contending for the cup.
June 19, 2010 1:53 PM ET | Delete
Nothing for Regs

Note to Darryl Sutter: Stop trading for Florida players!!!
June 19, 2010 3:51 PM ET | Delete
JBO needs to lead/establish new face to Flame D. Agree, no more Florida players. Not much for Lanks
June 19, 2010 3:53 PM ET | Delete
I hate to say this but I think the forward is Horton.
June 19, 2010 5:42 PM ET | Delete
Hamuis move makes regehr more valuable.
June 19, 2010 7:44 PM ET | Delete
Good blog. Horton scares me, but could be worth a shot. I appreciate Regehr, but would be surprised if he is back. Sutter is moving a Dman, him or Sarich I think, and a proven forward (Horton? Someone better?) is the reason (clearing space for it). I still like idea of Tangs coming back for 1.5-1.7 per

On Halak, Gautier just f-ed up big time. two ifs (which is what cameron is, and we got for free) for a world beater? I cant imagine the dressing room was too happy to hear of it either. St. Lou is now a contender.
June 19, 2010 8:00 PM ET | Delete
Makes u wonder if Kipper is worth what we think. Cant imagine being in the Kovi hunt.
June 19, 2010 8:17 PM ET | Delete
doesnt make me wonder about Kippers worth at all. He is a top 3 goalie. Halak had half a season and 1 incredible playoffs. Turek ring a bell?
June 19, 2010 9:42 PM ET | Delete
Dont remind me. Wow if Arnott can get a prospect
June 19, 2010 9:43 PM ET | Delete
so can langkow
June 19, 2010 11:14 PM ET | Delete
Lanks is still worth something I think he can get a prospect.
June 19, 2010 11:28 PM ET | Delete
Langkow is highly regarded outside of the flames for his two way play and offensive stats he's had previously. He is 4 mil though so really just having him off the cap would be a win, what comes in return is almost irrelevant if the money is spent wisely (frolov), Rumors abound him and iggy had a falling out...
June 20, 2010 12:29 AM ET | Delete
Daymond was very good friends with Dion I think he would be ready to get out.
June 20, 2010 12:57 AM ET | Delete
Maybe we can get Burke to take him. Why do leaf fans on the blogs think Dion is the messiah
June 20, 2010 12:58 AM ET | Delete
At games people thought he was an over paid pilon

Looks like Horton is a Bruin so no need to speculate anymore!!
June 22, 2010 4:20 PM ET | Delete
Sutter did a nice job with the UFA signings... but, contrary to what Sutter's agenda seems to be; you can still have a 1st and 2nd rounder AND sign the UFA's. Let's just hope he doesn't do anymore damage than he's already done.
June 22, 2010 6:17 PM ET | Delete
Would not have been a proper fit anyway and Florida wanted Picks, something we don't have. Spezza on the other hand would do just fine for, the rights to White, with Langkow, and Dawes. Might not be quite enough but you get my point. Still do Regehr for a Second, and roll the dice on Kabanov ( if still available) then in the third pick another Russian to be his roommate in Abotsford
June 22, 2010 6:23 PM ET | Delete
Lets think Lottery talent if we don't have a high pick. Why not take the undersized skilled players that if they were bigger and from North America would be in the first round. So what, if half of them never sign or step foot in Calgary, most of the low round guys never step foot in an NHL dressing room so whats the difference.
June 24, 2010 6:48 PM ET | Delete
Is there any chance of Sutter bringing back Savard if he is up for grabs as most rumours are stating? With Boston trading Wideman away, they could use another top 4 D, which the Flames could easily supply in Sarich or Regher. Just a thought. Also, if the Flames are in fact looking into Kovalchuk's rights wouldn't our scoring problems be solved with a #1 line of Iggy, Kovi amd Savard down the middle? I know I'm fishing, but imagine the possibilities!!
