Holy Schniekie!!!!

What a night!

With the Orange and Black up 3-1, on two Jeff Carter powerplay goals and one shortie by Mike Richards, the Lightining tie it in third with a missed rebound opportunity put back by Steve Downie, of all people. Then, with 16 seconds remining, Scottie Hartnell pulled a bush-league move of tossing his glove at the stick/puck of the Lightning player on a breakaway (which Biron saved, btw).
A huge No-No. Ryan Malone was awarded a potential game winning penalty shot and the entire hockey loving population of the Delaware Valley held its collective breath. Fortunately for Hartnell, Marty Biron stayed calm in net and stopped Ryan Malone's penalty shot attempt - the sigh of relief was audible. Hartnell didn't believe it would result in a penalty shot and said, "looking back, it was stupid."

Stupid, or not, the teams went to overtime. On a 4 on 4 dump-in, Ryan Malone (remember him?) interfered with Marty Biron - with a little help from rookie phenom Luca Sbisa - and the Flyers went on the powerplay. From then on, the Captain took over. Mike Richards took a gorgeous behind the back pass from a pinching Kimmo Timonen in the high slot and buried the biscuit past outstanding Lightning goalie Mike Smith - who on numerous occasions, frankly, kept Tampa from being blown out. Victory snatched from the Jaws of Defeat.

Jeff Carter - The devastating wrist shot. 2 powerplay goals (17,18) ties him for the league lead in goal scoring. A three point night, playing quality minutes clearly indicates his continued domination.

Marty Biron - 35 saves, 11 powerplays against for 32 minutes of man-down time, stoned Ryan Malone on penalty shot with 16.3 seconds remaining and survived a 5 minute major to end the first and begin the second periods.

Mike Richards - The Captain. One unassisted, shorthanded goal - third of the season and the team's league leading 10th shortie - and one game winning, powerplay goal to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Hopefully, for years to come, the dynamic duo of Richards and Carter will continue to force fans to utter, "Holy Schniekie!!!"

Aaahhh another wonderful SYF blog, I got my fix. What a crazy game, once Downie tied it the only thing going through my mind was "why can't we ever beat this team." I think Holmgren had the comment of the night though. "We've found a new event for the Carnival." - SZ
