While it's been agreed that the Flyers indeed need to have an outstanding offseason as far as free agent signings go, they also need to address the vacancy of a team captain. Here in Philadelphia, finding the perfect, long-term, healthy captain has been about as easy as getting Coatsey to make a comment without rambling for 5 hours. Since Lindros took over the role, ther...
Vincent Lecavalier, Brad Richards, and Martin St. Louis. The Tampa Bay Lightning's Big 3. Before the series with New Jersey, one of the best defensive teams in hockey, the story regarding the Lightning was "What's Tampa Bay going to do when New Jersey shuts down their main line - where will the scoring come from?". Funny thing happend on the way to answering that que...

Id like to start of this blog by giving my condolences to the Ferguson family may John Sr. rest in peace. Now to this blogs topic and that is what can the Leafs do to obtain another scoring forward. The Leafs currently sit with about 1.5 million in Cap room and an easy move could be signing an UFA to suit up for the team but not many are out there that could really make...
I have a oil on wood painting of Maurice "Rocket" Richard that was painted back in the 1950's. I purchased it from his estate auction after he passed a few years ago and it has since hung proudly in my hockey shop overlooking about 5000 sq. ft. of hockey gear. I just had an older gentleman that came in to get his skates sharpened and noticed it hanging on the wall. He puff...
Per the Globe and Mail, this will be Bob Cole's last year calling games for HNIC and Harry Neale will see a reduced work load. I myself have mixed feeligns on this. Bob Cole still has one of the best voices from the booth in all of sports, but unfortunately his eye sight hasn't kept up. Harry Neal can still do it, but Cole really seems to bring him down. It really is...
"Always do everything you ask of those you command." -George S. Patton, Jr. As some of you may know, I am a huge fan of General George S. Patton, Jr. He was a true leader in every sense of the word. VANCOUVER - If the Philadelphia Flyers were looking to build momentum off their time atop the mountains of Whistler, British Columbia, they couldn't have asked for much more. Through the first 8 games of the season, Kimmo Timonen has been the solid defensive presence the Flyers hoped for when he was acquired just ahead of the opening of free agency. But it's safe to say that Timonen wishes he had this one game back. A late miscue in his own zone led to an errant pass attempt to Danny Briere and a turnover that eventually ended up in the Flyer...

What's Wrong with Marty? I could not agree with Tim Panaccio more...the Flyers are getting beat much worse than the 1-0 score would attest. Flyers win 3-1 in Pittsburgh last night. Good win for the Flyboys, who had dropped four of their last six games. 2 and 0 versus the Pens this year. Have the Flyers gained any respect from the Pens, namely from Crybaby Sid? I don't think so. -Mike Richards is now my favorite NHLer. -Why is there no discussion of Andy Sutton's elbow to the head of Lasse Kukkonen at the buzzer of last night's Flyers-Isles game? It was a dangerous hit that marred a fun game to watch. Sutton now has laid two elbows this year that I found to be borderline dirty and review worthy for suspension. -If Sean Avery did make derogat...

I spoke earlier of the kind of statement the Islanders could have made tonight by beating the Ottawa Senators. Well, they got the 'W' alright, mustering one hell of a collective effort all night long and pulling out a 3-2 shootout victory. But, in the end, the strongest statement of the evening was made by Mr. Rick DiPietro. So what if Andrej Meszaros scored a couple of...

Last year, Sidney Crosby and the Penguins owned the Flyers. Dennis Lemieux didn't even have to ask Joe McGrath to see that. The Pens won all 8 meetings and Crosby scored almost at will. Well, this season, the story has been different. The Flyers have won the first two meetings, and Crosby has not scored a goal. Crosby has been largely frustrated, especially in the last...
It's great when your team hands out an old fashioned ass-whompin'. It's better when they do it to a division rival. It's even better when that rival is loaded with hypocritical, whining clowns. Those nine words from Mike Richards caused his agent, Pat Morris, to take a phone call from Flyers GM Paul Holmgren and throw the bruising former winger for a loop. Flyers Future

How nice is it to be a Flyers fan nowadays? At the All-Star break last season, the Flyers were sitting with 27 points and in the midst of a January where they accumulated four points - yep, four. Although Slapshot is the finest hockey movie ever made, there are a couple of others that I've recently watched that are focused more on the drama and struggle of hockey and less on the comedy. Brad Richards is making a ton of money. Richards is also the owner of the worst +/- in hockey. Richards also makes perfect sense for Dallas. It sounds crazy, but I've talked myself into wanting this potential trade to go through. I feel that the best way to justify this is to look at the short term benefits vs. the long term benefits. Brad Richards is the owner...

Brett Hull was just on BaD Radio and let the world in on who Richards was playing with in practice. Brad Richards is surrounded by Finns. Nik Hagman and Antti Miettinen are flanking him. The Flyers failed to win a game in their first six games, as they lost 6 games(Sharks twice) to some elite teams. On opening night, the Flyers lost their home opener against the Rangers 4-3, then two nights later, they lost to Montreal 5-3....

Flyers destroy Bolts 6-1

Posted Friday | Comments 0
What an amazing game it was tonight for the Flyers. Unbelievable. The Flyers scored three goals in the third period, as they put a beating on the Bolts 6-1 tonight. Going into this game, I didn't think that the Flyers were going to score six goals against Mike Smith. Obviously, I'm a huge Mike Smith fan, and I would love to see him in a Flyers uniform. Luckily for the Flye...
I understand the need to fit Briere into the roster but at the expense of the captain, leading scorer, and Selke candidate seems a bit odd. Richards is in the top ten in the league for pts/gm and putting him with 3rd line calibre line-mates is a waste. He is still getting top powerplay time which is smart, but at even strength his talent is being wasted.

As we have moved through the season, I've had an eye toward the playoffs with my Flyers and have noticed a few shortcomings which I felt would prevent them from being able to get out of the conference to challenge for the Stanley Cup to be real contenders; not pretenders as they are now. Enver Lisin is now a NY Ranger. He comes from Phoenix for Lauri Korpikoski, who never hit his stride as a Ranger. Lisin netted 13 goals and put up 8 helpers on a financialy troubled and offensively lousy Coyotes team. In my opinion it is a great move by Glen Sather. Lisin is an RFA and can be used as trade bait to lure in the #1 center to feed Gaborik the puck. I do believ...

Panthers vs. Flyers: Game 8

Big win for Philadelphia tonight as they get closer to playing a full 60-minute game. Colin Campbell said on NHL Live this afternoon that there was nothing illegal about Mike Richards' hit on David Booth Saturday night. "He did not jump. He did not elbow him. He did not hit him in a place where he wasn't expecting it. It was an area where you expect to get hit, both the player passing the puck and the player doing the hitting," Campbell said. Campbell...

Flyers/Avs Trade Possibilities

First and foremost, this blog is simply to provide a fun conversation as well as enjoying some of the rumors that are going on. It is no secret that the Flyers are struggling, and in the cap era this seems to be the only time that major trades really have any traction. For the most part this also brings about big dealings at the deadline. In relation to the Flyers I ...
Let's face it...Penguins and Flyers fans love TWO things... 1) Their respective teams... and 2) to dislike, dare I say hate, the OTHER team/team's fans But in February, both sides will be put into an akward position as the 2010 Olympics open. That is the sense I get from this Flyer team. Almost there. The offense is starting to play with a greater level of consistency than I've seen for most of the year. With 2 weeks left to go, several of the NHL awards are all but decided. Dave Tippet is the clear favorite to win the Jack Adams. Matt Duchesne is a fairly good bet for the Calder. And who's going to stand in the way of Pavel Datsyuk capturing his 5th straight Lady Byng? However, it appears that the race for the Rocket Richard trophy may come down to the final game. ...
Alright fellow Philly fans. It's time for me to make some rash statements about our favorite hockey club. It's time to make a final prediction for the season and do some speculating regarding roster moves for the summer. The Flyers are in the Stanley Cup Finals! Congrats to all the Flyer faithful, and even those who had their moments of doubt and pain. Mike Richards is becoming a leader before our eyes. Big news in the NHL today as Kovy finally decided on where he wanted to spend the balance of his career. When D.Sutter came from San Jose he made a habit of trading for players he knew from that system, we all appreciate the Kirpusoff trade but the players that followed like Lynn Loyns, Bryan marchment, Mark Smith and Jeff Friesen indicate that Sutter like to trade or sign what is familiar to him. The draft came and went a bit more anti-climatic than expected. The Sabres did well for themselves adding the agile Finnish winger Joel Armia (though i would have preferred Mark McNeill) and the exciting Daniel Catenacci but to expect either of these players to have in impact in the 2011-2012 season is unrealistic. Some of the worst Ranger signings in history include the likes of Bobby Holik, Darius Kasparitus, Theoren...
Part three of revisiting some of the recent bigger deals in the NHL involves the Philadelphia Flyers (again) and the Los Angeles Kings. This was the 2nd impact deal the Flyers made in the summer of 2011. Thursday evening Jeff Carter was reunited with his former teammate and captain Mike Richards as the LA Kings made the move to acquire his services. LA sent defensemen Jack Johnson and a conditional first round pick to Columbus (2012 or 2013) for Jeff Carter. The...

The LA Kings: A Dynasty

Posted Friday | Comments 0
Which is the greatest dynasty team in the history of the NHL? Is it the Edmonton Oilers of the late 80's? The Canadiens of, well, pick a decade other than the one we're in, or was it the Islanders of the early 80's? Another team perhaps? I guess my point is that in the history of the NHL, there have been teams which have succeed for prolonged periods of time. And I'm no...
Not since the late 80s has a team thoroughly dominated the NHL like the Oilers. There was a 5 year period where they won 4 Stanley Cups. The Oilers organization took what youth they had and expended as much from them as possible. Ever since the Oilers of the 80s, there has not been another team that ran through its opponents so easily. I would call the Oilers of the 80s a ...
Honestly, I couldn't think of a better story for the 2012 NHL season. An 8th place team barely makes the playoffs after having an abysmal year were they couldn't score to save their lives. It took a head coach change, a huge trade and a lot of luck to even accomplish this. And yet, here we are, congratulating the LA Kings! It's quite amazing really, I had them picked every...
It seems that the NY Rangers were mentioned as contenders in every big prize during the lead up to the Draft and the FA period. But it seems between the huge moves made by the Penguins and the Wild, the Rangers (along with most the rest of the NHL) were left debating on making passes at Shane Doan, rolling the dice on Alexander Semin and recently seem to have let the idea...

Just saw this from Canadian Press: "A large section of the roof blew off the top of Montreal's Maurice Richard Arena on Thursday, apparently by the force of powerful winds. Part of the roof, about the size of a couple of school buses, tumbled down the side of an exterior wall onto some trees. Officials did not report any injuries." Well, I guess there is no way th...

As it is with any team, good goaltending leads to good results. That was borne out Saturday in the Columbus Blue Jackets season opening tilt against division rival Nashville. New #1 goalie Sergei Bobrovsky was solid stopping 32 of 34 shots in regulation and OT before besting five of six Predators in the shootout. Derick Brassard tallied the shootout winner in the sixth...
This is pre-Phoenix, but I think the Edmonton game was a sign the Kings are headed back to last season's form/pattern. They've shook the cobwebs I mean the suds of the party/offseason off and are ready to be stingy on D and in net. The forwards can't score, yet, and that is how the Kings got it going last year. Great D and netminding, anemic offense. Clifford is everyth...

Through seven games so far, the Kings have played far from the level it had been during the Stanley Cup run. There is too much talent for this club to be where it is now. I understand all of the accolades; the team is still hung over, they are not 100% with weary legs playing until mid-June, they have a target on their back and everyone's gunning for them...etc, etc! Pe...
Toronto Still Work in Progress, LA Fights Back. 2/5 Kings 4 @ Blue Jackets 2; Maple Leafs 3 @ Capitals 2 It was quite a bit of fun going back and forth between the Leafs and Kings games, both playing at the same time tonight in eastern time zone. It was also exciting to see both teams hang onto 3-2 leads late, then equally satisfying to see both teams...
President's Day Blog! Enjoy the day off...well for those who are teacher's like me got the day off! I am sure others did too...hopefully. Some comments on the Kings game at the United Center on Sunday... There is no doubt the Rangers took a step backwards in 2012-2013. Glen Sather shook up the entire team with many offseason moves last summer. As we saw they were moves that destroyed team chemistry and divided a locker room. Now add in the shortened season because of the lockout and it spelled disaster for the Rangers from top to bottom. John Tortorella lack of patience an...
Friends, fans and upper management we gather here today to look back upon the Flyers career of the only player we know who can actually flick a switch when games matter. Danny Briere came to the Flyers in July of 2007 and gave this organization hope, that even after an abysmal season star players still wished to play in the City of Brotherly Love. We had all hoped for ...
Tampa has been shut out in 3 of the last 5 outings. Due to lack of goal scoring capabilities, the Lightning have managed some fine line shuffling for tonights til against the great white norths capital. I am a huge fan of these new lines. During practice yesterday, the new lines looked like this: Peca Richard Hart Ikonen Drouin Palat Panik Johnson Killorn Kucherov Mu...

Who's up for buyout?

Posted Saturday | Comments 0
The final four teams remain in the National Hockey League Playoffs with the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs coming to an end in early to mid June. On June 15th, or 48 hours after the Stanley Cup has been awarded, the NHL compliance buyout period begins. All 30 NHL teams will have until June 30th to use a compliance buyout on up to two players on its roster. These buyouts wil...
Our "beloved" Maple Leafs return to the ACC Monday night against the lowly, yet always dangerous against Toronto, Carolina Hurricanes after a winless road trip against four of the perennially toughest Western Conference teams. There is no shame in losing close games on the road against the Kings, Ducks, Sharks and Blues. What is a shame is that the Leafs lost to those ...

Todd Richards: 2012-2015 John Tortorella: 2015- For everyone that wanted something to happen, this happened. Todd Richards was fired and replaced by John Tortorella following a 4-0 shutout last night. Personally, it's sad to see a really good coach leave a really good team because that is what this team is. Richards led this young squad to multiple 40 win seasons,...
