Remember the Craig

Posted 11:48 AM ET | Comments 0
I remember being a boy of 12 when the miracle on ice happened. Many players from that team were drafted in and had some good nhl careers. One that comes to mind being a Sabres fan is Mike Ramsey. On the flip side, one player drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers was usa’s goalie Jim Craig.
Craigs transition from winning the gold metal at the Olympics to the NHL was anything less than stellar. One would think that since he won the gold there has to be nhl caliber talent. Well that talent turned into a fart storm in a tornado. Nothing went Craig’s way in the NHL, His 1st year in the nhl was an abysmal 3.79 goals against which is .01 off his average.
30 games played with a 3.78 gaa will get you a stint in the ECHL. Craigs nhl stats are as follows; NHL Career 30 27 11 10 7 -- 700 100 3.78 .857 ,1586 minutes. Now here we are as Sabres fans we know we need a good goaltender to shore up the back ends and we’re elated to have Devon Levi kind of in the system. Levi gave notice that he’s heading back to college to win an NCAA title.
If that’s what he wants what’s to stop him from completing his education and then signing elsewhere as a free agent?
The last player Buffalo drafted I can remember that went this way was Jimmy Vesey. And this is how that went; drafted by the Sabres, signs with the Rangers and then traded to the Sabres for a third rd pick. Two 3rd round picks for a player that doesn’t belong in the NHL. Again, horrible asset management by a team of kindergartners.
Wow, sorry about the Vesey tangent but it goes along with my point about Devon Levi. Is he the next Hasek or is he the next Jim Craig? Will he eventually sign with Buffalo or will he go four years and become a free agent? rnOnly time will tell & hopefully it’s not the latter.
