The draft week is starting off with good news already, the cap is being raised by close to five million for next season and with that the floor is also being raised as well. This has a two fold benefit for our Flames, first it gives the team breathing room to make some important signings or at least be able to pursue one major free agent July first. The second benefit would be the trade possibilities that a raised floor would have. Teams like Florida are looking for contracts that have a higher hit than salary and many a team will be lining up to dump contracts they do not want anymore.

One contract that until this morning was a total non-starter was Matt Stajan, his 4.5 million salary next year actually exceeds his cap hit of 3.5 million however the following two seasons would see a total 1 million savings on the remainder of his contract. After this year his 2.5 million would be more in line with what he should actually be making (or less). Another of couple targets could be Regehr and Bouwmeester although their salary is only slightly less than their actual cap hit.

****

This next week could be very telling for the Flames new general manager, this week could define him. After giving trading a pick for Modin, giving Glencross a no movement clause, being unable to sign Erixon and the rumblings that even Tanguay will be testing UFA waters Feaster has a lot of ground to make up. Trading up not down, getting rid of salary and drafting well are all huge for him this week. In the draft , should the flames remain 13th, it looks like the focus is more and more becoming McNiell, Armia, or Bartschi. Feaster has said that they will be “busy” this week. Let’s see if his word holds true.

Great news about the cap, hopefully they spend it wisely. IMO Feaster should trade Reggie or Sarich, for picks. Its time to try the new guys on D. As far as the draft, if it was me I would be looking to find pure offensive skills and skating ability with less emphasis on size

Would love to see that Mcneil kid avail. Would you trade that 13th for Torontos 2 first rounders? Or our two 2nds

IMO the flames need to sign Tangs and work on trading JBO whilst there is still a market for him out in the Eastern conference

Or 1 of our 2nds

Jerry Forbes (not really a sports guy) reported last week on CJay92 that Tangs was all but done at 5.75 for two years.

It is possible, sometimes these delays have more to do with other things than salary like trade caluses or term. Tanguay at 2.88 per year would be great 5.75 per year is let him walk money.

Kevin- J-bo back to florida? Would make a ton more sense, they need to get to the floor, the defence is in need of a vetran, they have a top three pick... How about Florida 1st and Repik for calgary's 1st and J-Bo. Pure cap clearing.

I like it!

Sane- Forbes said on air 5.75 total for the two years so 2.88 / yr. I think that is a good deal. I dont want him much north of 3 mill.

I wouldn't totally discredit it, I believe that may be their offer and he may want to test ufa to see if a better offer presents itself. If not then he has it. To be honest unless I hear a contract out of a very credible source I would tend to not believe. There's about 15 people who I would totally trust and forbes isn't on the list! lol

p.s. karlsson just signed two years. Irving is available now too.

I would think Tanguay would be more in the park of 3.75 per year... can't see him making less than Joker...
June 20, 2011 4:17 PM ET | Delete
I agree 3.75 is what Tanguay should get.... more than double what he got last year... He has to be paid higher than 3 - at 64 Mill the average salary for any jabrone who is a UFA is 3 million and Tangs finished in the top 30 in points which makes him a top scorer in a 30 team league... I'd go as high as $4 on a 2 year deal but would try to offer 3.75 on a 3 year deal.

As for J-Bo.... I think he would really fit in well in Montreal (they have a ton of Cap-space), Ottawa, NJ, anywhere in the SE.... He would be Dynamite in DET- but we can't trade him there, they would turn him into a bonafide superstar. I think the Formula has to be bascially what Sane said: Move us up higher in the 1st rnd, and we would have to take a bad contract back... Zubrus? Olesz?

I believe tangs would be willing to take a discount to stay in Calgary. Unless a really big deal came his way. After he left calgary the first time, he never really found his wings as he did with Iggy. And now his first season back, was one of his best in years, I think that holds a lot of weight. I doubt he cares as much as people think in regards of competing with Jokenin's salary. Expect another no trade if that happens though.

Going to throw this out there. Karlson signs and everyone jumps to the conclusion that Irving is available. Well Feasters comments last night were very flatering of Karlson and he even said he's almost ready to be a #1. We need to clear cap space, could Kipper be available? I'm sure there is a team that would take some baggage and Kipper. Perhaps a Kipper and Stajan or Hagman combo? I don't want to see it but it could be a quick way to get nearly 10 mill off payroll.
June 21, 2011 1:40 PM ET | Delete
Yeah Tyco, I think thats Feasters blockage is the NTC. He doesnt like them but has to do them to get guys to sign for less.
June 21, 2011 2:43 PM ET | Delete
Pull off that Kipper trade
June 21, 2011 5:15 PM ET | Delete
Kipper/Hagman for Repik

Adam portzline from columbus posted that Bouwmeester had at least been discussed as part of a trade with the jackets. That was all the detail.

Harley Hotchkiss has passed away. What a sad day for Flames fans and Calgarians in general.

kevin I think you are talking about sens and flames? I have no idea. I believe the Flames would love Couterier, so if he's available at 6 maybe they have a deal in place? Regher is in play apparently and I could see that being a deal, maybe a michalek coming back for salary.
June 23, 2011 11:34 AM ET | Delete
That makes sense. Couldnt see much of a match there.
June 24, 2011 8:07 AM ET | Delete
Well apparently sens aren't getting Reggie so who knows? I haven't heard the sens anywhere but here really...
