I heard on the radio this morning Darren Dreger say that the Flames, "..just ran into a hot goalie.." last night in Dallas. Apparently he hasn't read the papers here, the Flames are MAKING goalies hot. Conklin, Auld...it doesn't matter, if you want their confidence up stick 'em in net against the Flames.
After the Burrows incident it becomes really easy to look at the refs and wonder if they are being square. After ignoring Kipper after he shouted at them that his mask was undone after a shot to the head (which he had to shake off to suspend play), they call him for a "slash" in OT after being run into in his crease. Then call another VERY marginal call shortly there after right at the end of OT to make things as difficult as possible.... hmmmm. On top of that Bouwmeester gets a penalty for Eriksson forgetting how to skate...hmmmm
I hate to look back but it's fun to do once in a while, the Flames have never been known for the drafting so how different would the team be if we drafted differently, I only looked at player drafted within 5 spots after the flames picked to keep it someone sane. So having said that what would things look like if:
Hemsky had been allowed to slide by the Oilers one more spot in 2001 to the Flames who got Kobasew, or the drafted Umberger...
They had Drafted Semin (13) instead of Nystrom (10) or even Higgins at (14)...
In 2003 instead of Dion they drafted Jeff Carter...
How would Mike Green look? Better than Kris Chucko probably. 2004 could have also used yielded Shultz, Shultz and Green were drafted by Washington and now make up the best +/- d tandem in the league.
Even as late as 2007 when Backlund was drafted, as highly touted as he is, the Flames could have had Perron who has proven he can score already.
Take ONE of those things and this team would have that extra bit of punch it needs, as it stands Kobasew doesn't play here, Nystrom is a grinder, Dion is getting slightly worse every year, Chucko has played one game in the NHL I think. Other players drafted 1st round are Pelech and Irving but 2005 and 2006 are still pretty recent.
