All General managers have the dilemma of looking at their team when they are doing well and ask themselves honestly what they could use to move forward and hopefully take the big prize. When the team is doing poorly it is too hard to trade so when you are doing well is the time to make it happen.
The Flames are doing well.
So the question is what does this team need to get over the hump, I personally think a slick center or a heart and soul center to play with Jerome and squid. Either a guy who can dish it to them or a guy who will get it out of the corners for them.
They need another very capable blue liner to play with Dion, maybe Vandermeer will fill that role, last year Phanuef played very well with him and for sure wasn't horrible in the +/ - like he is now.
Here's the players I think Calgary could lose, feel free to mix and match and add and not forget our 2nd round pick (first isn't going anywhere with this draft):
Boyd, Lombardi, Primeau, Roy, Sarich, Vandermeer. Prospects- Aulie, Baldwin, Irving, Keetley, Chucko.
Players, in order, I'd love to see Calgary acquire:
Dustin Brown- L.A.- he's the hitter, go in the corner player I think is affordable, a total team guy, he scores, he's young with three years at 3 mil cap hit.... awesome. (would give up lombardi keetley/irving and some pick to get him..maybe more) Squid can play center.
Olli Jokinen- Keenans got some man love for him. He's not going anywhere if the desert dogs stay in the playoff hunt.
(Lombardi, Boyd, Chucko)
Lecavalier- would it be THAT hard to convince him to play with Squid and Iggy?? I doubt it. Would you have to give the farm to get him? yes. So this probably isn't the year to do it and Calgary couldn't compete with Montreal in terms of depth...but it would be nice!!
Klesla- I have no idea what this trade would involve but this kid has just been buried in a rotten system on a rotten team and can still be an excellent D man.
Arnott- He's big, can score, can pass and is a great locker room guy- very difficult to acquire as long as the preds are in the hunt for the 8 spot though.
Also on the list- Lang, Connoly (with a really big helmet) and if desperate Antropov.
Antropov for Aulie and a 2nd
Antropov has 33 pts you wouldn't be desperate if you were acquiring him
You'd take Antro if desperate but Lang is fine? Antro is better and cheaper than Lang.
arnott will not go anywhere as long as he is happy here!
Let's talk trade? alright, how about this? Sanford was just put on waivers by vancouver. Do you think there is a realm of possibility that the Flames would add Sanford, or do you really think keenan is confidant with curtis Mac as the backup?
I really don't see how Sanford could be better than curtis mac. As for trades, I doubt most of the names listed here would actually be available. I really don't see Sutter making a major move, first off Calgary doesn't have many assets that could realistically be thrown into trades (can't see him moving any of the top prospects unless the deal was really good) second off the team is looking better than it has in two years.
Stajan for Aulie? That being said, Rusty Klesla would be a good fit in CGY and with CBJ looking to deal there could be a fit.
Mtl is not suppose to be a seller at the trade deadline (even if they were not suppsose to be last season and still traded Huet for a 2nd) so I doubt we would trade Lang when he is doing more than great with us. At least you have a really good defenseman to guive back and no, Sarrich is not an option.Maybe if we get Lombardi?Anyway, I doubt Lang would be dealt.
You are looking at LA's captain and best all around player... I doubt very much that he would be had for what you are offering... Same in the case of Jason Arnott... the guy is going nowhere unless you're offering the sun, the moon and the stars... I'm a little offended as a Leafs fan that Robert Lang and Tim Connolly are above Antropov on your list... Connolly, although talented, will never play a complete season and makes more than Antropov... Lang is almost a decade older makes double the amount and is arguably considerably less useful...
nreeb21, wouldn't give Stajan for Aulie... Aulie is a marginal prospect at best... think of trading Stajan for someone like Jay Harrison or Staffan Kronwall and you've got an idea of what kind of move that is...
Keep all this team together
Stajan would never in a million years get Kronwall in return. Don't kid yourself.
A-Mar you didn't see Aulie at the juniors?? Aulie is a very good prospect, Sutter isn't going to trade him for some random UFA or 3rd liner
