I wanted to sit down tonight and really try to discern why the Flames are a last place team because there is no way they should be. On paper this team is a good team. I don't want to hear about Kotalik and Jokinen etc. Those guys should get 20-30 goals even being defensively awful. Besides it's not as though shipping one of them would fix this team.
I have to admit I'm stumped. I'm as clueless about what it would take to fix this as Sutter probably is. I have explored every theory I can think of including the extremes of trading Kipper and Iginla which would, short term, kill the Flames competitiveness. I have thought about changing the power play, the coach, the uniforms, how they tie their skates... Nothing in my mind is fixing this version of the Flames. Too many players who were the best players on loser clubs. We got the Leaf's top three scorers in that trade for Dion, they came from the Leafs though, think they know how to win? J-Bo and Jokinen who toiled forever in Florida forever as the stars for a last place club year after year, think they know how to win?
Sure there are guys who have cup rings on this team, Sarich for one. As a collective though this is a team of losers, skilled as they may be. So how do you fix that? The answer is you don't, they are losers. You have to get them out and get winners in.
Plainly spoken if you have two teams equal in skill level but one team always wins and the other always loses what is the most simple explanation? They are losers. The 2011 Flames are losers. Say it once, exhale and accept it. Be aware that I am not "Jumping off the Bandwagon" I am simply looking at the stats and accepting what is put in front of me. I asked Oiler Fans to do it last year and admittedly am reaping what I have sown.
This took me a while to get here. I had to go through the levels of grief to achieve this understanding. I will now take you through the process:
Stage 1-Shock and Denial:
Game 1: Oilers 4 Flames 0. I said this was just a blip, first game, lots of road to travel here. They aren't as bad as that! I can't believe they just lost 4-0 to a bunch of rookies!! After 20 games The reality became too much to bear and after 30 sitting last is a cold slap in the face.
Stage 2- Pain and Guilt:
Walking into work when an Oiler fan co-worker showed me the unseeable stat, that the Flames were last and the Oilers were above them. I felt a little nauseous, the Tim Hortons double cream started curdling in my stomach and the everything bagel started tasting like bile. I wondered if it's because I took the stanley cup key chain off my key ring? Is this my fault? Could I have cheered louder? then a stinging pain entered my chest but that was just gas. Then a stinging pain entered my chest again and this time it was knowledge this is the worst Flames I have seen since Shantz was our number 1 center and there were "young guns".
Stage 3- Anger and Bargaining:
FIRE SUTTER(S)!! Burn the dome!! Trade every one good!!! AHHHHHHH!!!! Hit smash punch... What if I give you Iginla and you give me the Detroit red wings?? C'mon!!
Stage 4- Reflection:
Writing this Blog.
I'm only at stage 4 but do you know what stage 5, 6 and 7 are?
The upward turn.
P.S. as an after thought if the Flames DO finish last in the west, the east is so incredibly bad that they will still get the first 6-7 picks.
P.P.S.- Anyone else wondering how lame duck Dutter and Butter are right now?
