Lowest salary in the league according to capgeek (and maybe their finishing spot in 2014/15). This is new area for the Flames who have been top four a few times in spending.
This is an era where David Jones is the Flames top paid player along with Jiri Hudler. An era where they do not have a strong right winger for the first time in recent memory.
The Flames require at least two RW players coming into camp. Some hopes rest on signing Kevin Hayes our of Boston College and the former Blackhawk first rounder. He is allowed to go where ever he’d like though and has a player in another teams system, which may be very enticing for him. The Flames could probably use a right shot D as well.
Having said that what they really have, and the best value they possess, is actually hugecap space and a lot of money.
The Flyers signed Del Zotto today and are in a hole close to 4.5 million they need to clean up. Trading Mark Streit would get them past the hump and he certainly has value even though he’s on a 35 and over contract. Could the Flames help the flyers and help themselves? Could the same be said for Chicago, T.B., Bos, L.A., Tor and Pitts? What would they ask for in order to take on this cash?
At the draft a few trade rumour nuggets came out that Treliving had offer to take Came Ward and Carolina’s first round pick for his salary dump. They also tried the same thing with Ribeiro. Obviously G.M.’s turn down these deals as it would highlight how poor they are at their jobs. The fact remains that Calgary has identified the opportunity and made it known they would look at those deals, the price is high. A first round pick.
Even if they do not happen today, as training camp closes teams will have to look at their compliance and make some decisions. This also holds true at the deadline, Calgary could take horrid contracts for decent players like Glen x for the premium of picks/prospects. The salary retention aspect really adds a lot to the flexibility of teams to negotiate these deals as well.
Right before the NFL season, in early August we hockey fans are on boredom island. Hopefully these cap struggling teams make some wave soon to make things more interesting.

I think Hudler would stay on the right wing and Raymond play on the left on the 2nd lineGlenX Backlund HudlerRaymond Stajan Jones
I believe the deal with Phoenix only fell through because dick face Ribeiro refused to wave his no trade clause.
Next years draft is suppose to be the best in YEARS. No way a GM is going to trade that away just for a salary dump. Wishful thinking though.

Sparky- could be prospects or young players as well. Some teams will be hard pressed (philly)
surprisingly Philly will be fine as soon as they put both Pronger and Timmonen on LTIR, they will have 2.5m in cap space with a 21 man roster. Dont know how that is possible but CapGeek dont lie
So, did the rule for putting players on LTIR change? Before teams had to be compliant to start the season, before players wen on LTIR.

capgeek has a breakdown of how ltir works. Philly are still up against it after invoking it.
you have to take into account in season injuries and wanting to trade at the deadline. simply making compliance is not enough. Even by 2 mil.
