After watching Scott Niedermayer Choose the Ducks as the location he wanted to play, although he received phopne calls from several N.H.L. superstars trying to lure him in, the obvious reason was his brother. Growing up, taking turns shooting on net with each other acting as goalie, with each shot being the game 7 O.T. winner for the Stanley Cup, you had to think that the brother niedermayer wanted a chance to do that together for real.
Calgary has just signed Owen Nolan to a one year deal, not exactly the kind of contract that screams confidence. Although he will have a chance at being the 2nd line center, flames managment obviously have a plan a year from now. Across the country a huge star is emerging in Micheal Ryder, who just happened to sign a one year contract. His brother Daniel Ryder, one of top 3 center prospects for the Flames has a chance to crack the lineup this year with a stellar camp but more than likely will play at least one more year in the minors.
Is it just a coincedence that these right wing contracts were signed for one year? Next year Huselius will be looking for 4 million+ on the open market and for that money, or perhaps less, might get you Micheal Ryder if playing with his brother is a real possibility. Owen Noloan will be gone and you have space on the right wing and with huselius gone you could move in or up a center to take that position.
The moves the Flames make at center this year will dictate a lot of what happens of course with the 2009 squad, but you have to think Ryder might be eyeballing the low taxes of alberta coupled with the brother equation.
do you really think montreal signed a major part of their future just to give him away next year? if so, you may want to think again.
They won't have a choice due to his unresticted free angency, if you think he wants to take less to play where there's more taxes and a harsh media enviroment then they are fooling themselves. I'm not sayin ghe will sign in Calgary, but it would have that extra lure of playing with his Brother. Just so you're fully informed they signed him for one year to avoid an arbitration hearing. He didn't sign for more and if Montreal is where he wants to play perhaps you could explain why? Or maybe just think again.
Actually, Neidermeyer stated (in the news -- papers and tv) that he wanted to play in Vancouver. That was his first choice. Anaheim was his second choice. Nonis didn't have the cap room or any quick way to get it.
'I want to play in the West, I want to play on a team that has a chance to win, I want some privacy away from the rink, and I want to play with my brother,"' - Scott Neidermayer I know Vancouver is like Calgary in that he would have neither his brother nor privacy away from the rink.
