It seems when I present an argument or a retort to the Flames vs. Oilers question I am met with one response over and over again, it goes like this.
" yeah...well you ONLY have ONE Stanley Cup banner...".
Yeah, I guess it is true the Flames have ONLY one banner to hang and I won't get into a pissing competition about president banners and conference banners because really it is about the Stanley cup right?? At least I think so. The sad fact is neither club has anything to brag about, it's been over a decade, in fact almost two, since either of the organizations WON anything!! There is the respective conference titles but as any Oiler fan tells me it's about the Stanley Cups!!
Never mind the fact there are a number of clubs that have never won it at all and would like to at least claim that or even claim they won it during the peak of the oiler "dynasty" era when it was the hardest to do so, say like 1989.
If you're a hockey fan, and I am, you could never look at that team of the late 80's early 90's Oilers and say they sucked, they were incredible and would be in the top 5 of all time teams anywhere, i'm not even a fan of them and could tell you half of their roster from the top of my head.
Having said that, that time is over, it was over a long time ago. When Montreal doesn't make the playoffs this year (okay MAYBE they will) will they say, "yeah...but we won 20 some odd cups and Richard was the best ever all around player..."?? No... because it's pathetic. It reminds me of an old man talking about his hayday as the quaterback in highschool.
It's a new year, let's cheer our teams on to hopefully gain the next set of bragging rights which only last until the next winner is decided and we do it all over again. Take down the impotent "city of champions" sign until you win a cup. Otherwise get out your dust brushes, indiana jones hat and local guides to you can go dig up the fossil that is the Oiler dyanasty teams.
How did you forget to mention the leaf fans?
Pretty funny post SaneO. Did I tell you that when I was a kid, I walked 12 miles to school? Each way? In ten feet of snow? Oh, and my high school sports exploits, did I tell you about..........(Good thing we get a fresh NHL eason every 12 months so that we can hope anew.)
You sound like a bitter person, it is the past History of any sports team that people tend to look at. It is something to be proud of is you happen to come from that particular city. Edmonton has produced a lot of Champions in various sports. Hence the city of champion signs. Cheer up though, Calgary has a good hockey team and you will have lots to cheer about this year.
You've never heard a habs fan mention the 24 cups thing? Give me a break...the Leafs for chissakes celebrated the 40th anniversary of their last cup.The only people that say the number of cups isn't valid are those that are on the wrong end of the arguement....it obviously has nothing to do with todays teams, but it is a measure of the overall success of the franchise.
Over all success of a franchise is a good argument but wouldn't head to head match ups between the two be as important then? Calgary has a decided advantage in head to head against the Oiler...but it's probably only a valid argument if you're on the right side of it.
Way to be a jerk. The "City Of Champions" motto comes from the disastrous Black Friday Tornado back in 1989. Laurence Decore was mayor at the time, and said that Edmonton was a "City of Champions" because of it's ability to help one another after the unfortunate event. It has nothing to do with sports. It just so happened that the Oilers and Eskimos were experiencing success at the same time.
GOT 'EM. great post main event.
I guess when you say get out your dust brushes and Indiana jones gear you are referring to both Flames and Oilers fans? I would hope so, because as you said, neither team has much to brag about. Your banner is buried a lot deeper than ours are.
Below the Oilers banner was found the Flames last banner, since, as many flames fans tend to forget, the Oilers are the more recent Stanley Cup Champions. Granted that is all ancient history and I think Calgary will likely finish ahead of....o whats this I hear, those same archeologists have just turned up some artifacts that suggest Adrian Aucoin and Owen Nolan were at one point, good at hockey
