For the first time in a very long time Flames fans were treated to something wonderful, something that they hadn't seen since the early 90's, something every other team hopes to have every year... scoring.
Sutter had made a trade for Tanguay (another steal of a trade from the Zen master) and in addition Huselius had blossomed into his potential giving them two very skilled left wings, Jerome was on pace for a record year until he was injured for a month, Langkow was tipping in shots like Nieuwendyk had given him personal lessons. We witnessed passing plays that actually finished in tic-tac-toe fashion but there was a problem with all of this talent, the identity of the team was supposed to be grinding/defense/hard working and what they ended up with was confusion, especially on the road.
Since Keenan first was announced as the new head coach I have to love the direction he is pointing, his new team identity is hardworking (still of course)/ puck possession/ skating....sound familiar? You might have heard this same philosophy out of Detroit, who decimated the flames in the first round last year. They beat us to the puck, kept the puck, and forechecked better than us (by us I mean the flames, not that I have any athletic claim or professional claim to the organization!).
This is the new NHL, the Flames talent suits what Keenan is saying, he is also quoted as saying "Kipper is...what he is" when asked about the starting goalie job this year meaning that he is a vezina finalist so stop asking. No doctor hook this year, a new fast puck moving approach and high expectations from him on his leaders should make for maybe the best start we have seen here in a long time.
a very big P.S.... kipper IS re-signing so oiler fans can now point to Dion as the next guy who won't sign.
