I'm just going to list the top players from each team and compare, at the end if any oiler fan can tell me on that they can be certain the Oilers are a better team let me know.

top centers:
Sykora 53 points..oops sorry guys couldn't pay him enough to play there either should I move on to Nylander?? EEERRRR my bad, let me start over.

Top Centers:
Horcoff- 16 g 35a 51 points Langkow- 33g 44a 77 points- Flames
2nd centers:
Stoll- 13 g 26 a 39p Lombardi- 20 g 26a 46p- Flames (even if stoll was injured, being rugged is part of the game, his ppg is better but he was made of glass last year)
Top right wings (this will be funny):
Hemsky- 13g 40a 53 p Iginla- 35g 55a 94 p- Flames (this almost counts as two...)
Pisani- 14g 14a 28p Nolan- 16g 24a 40p- Flames
Top left wings (sorry I have to take a break now...I've been laughing too hard):
Sanderson- 11g 18a 29 p oh no no I mean Penner ( i mean they paid tanguay money for him why not compare??) Penner 29g 16a 45 p Tanguay 22g 59a 81 p (almost double...good job lowe)
Moreau- 1 p...okay I'll be nice and give him his average 30p Huselius 34g 43a77p- Flames

Hmm how about a theorhetical question, if you were to ask any GM in the league who'd they'd want on their top four would you pick:
Phaneuf/Regehr/ Sarich/ Aucoin
OR
Souray/ Pitkanen/ Staios and Smid...
The top two had a collective minus 52 last year... the other two didn't break even either, sounds perfect for their...
Goaltending:
Roloson or Kipper. Well... only one of them is a vezina winner who won the Jenning trophy by HIMSELF. -Flames

Coaches-
Craig Mactavish or Mike Keenan? Both aren't wonderful but Keenan has won the cup and been to the final 4 times. Our assistant was a head coach who got into the playoffs last year, yours is a head coach who should have considered putting a helmet on when he was playing. - Flames
G.M.'s
Ours still has respect around the league- Flames

I'm sorry but no matter how much you argue or warm your milk up before you cry, the Flames are the better team, be objective, look at the stats...

If I was to award one point to the Oilers Organization it would be to their prospects as they have drafted really well... it's hard to miss with three first rounders though...

kozzy, I believe the term "What have you done for me recently?" comes into affect there. Stanley Cup finals in 2004 comes before 2006.

Let me know when the Oilers aren't a basement team in the NHL...well talk after Dustin Penners contract runs out, alright?

You're right that the Flames are a better team, but you're wrong about a few points. Horcoff vs Langkow......You're comparing an off year to a career year. Horc is the younger and a better 2 way player IMO and their career highs for points are pretty much even.....OilersStoll vs Lombardi - stoll is the better all around player and he adds touhness that Lombardi doesn't, but Lombardi's speed is a difference maker....evenPisani vs Nolan - again, even. Given the choice between players at this stage of their careers, I'd lean toward Pisani. Nolans injury history is a negative.Ethan Morea vs. Huselius is a ridiculous comparison based on their chins alone:o)And giving Keenan an Edge or MacTavish because he won the cup is funny, seeing the only time he won it was so long ago that MacT was playing for him at the time......if you are going to compare recent results for all players, you should stick to this decade for coaching as well.
August 22, 2007 11:05 AM ET | Delete
dagley.....you do realize that 2006 is more recent than 2004 right......great post though!
August 22, 2007 11:14 AM ET | Delete
You're only comparing points, I know it's tough to measure the intangibles but I'd way rather have Moreau over Huselius but really it's a bad comparison -- totally different players. Flamers had good scoring last year but where were they in the playoffs. Nice series against Detroit. Horrible. Nice game 7 against Anaheim in '06. Ouch. Indeed, you guys are better on paper and I am worried about injuries. We're all homers here....Stoll over Lombardi -- anyday. Our D is catching up more then you think. Penner has a ton of upside and is bigger and tougher then Tanguay. Keenan may help the psychology of that locker room or he'll make it worse. What good are all those points when you can't win on the road. Heartless. GM's are equal in my opinion. Good luck with that pylon Nolan. I'll take Pisani. I believe we have more character and if we stay pretty healthy you won't be laughing (in brackets of course) And do be surprised if Sanderson pots fifteen to twenty. I remain optimistic. You guys will finish ahead of us, no doubt. Lets see what happens if you guys sustain similar injuries....
August 22, 2007 11:22 AM ET | Delete
there's more to hockey than just points. I take Penner over Tanguay and Stoll over Lombardi anyday if you consider them as an all round hockey player. Flames fans watch out for our PP.

DJ...THAT CHIN COMMENT MADE ME LAUGH OUT MAN....
August 22, 2007 1:06 PM ET | Delete
man am i gonna love it after next season when kipper bolts...you guys are so screwed after that...that guy can't wait to get his ass to tampa...and im gonna love watching your asses get kicked in the playoffs
August 22, 2007 1:30 PM ET | Delete
That's funny because last year in Edmonton everyopne was saying "there's no way you can sign Jerome, Regehr, Paheuf and Kipper and you are going to suck soooomuch"... well all I can say is Sutter gets the job done and no one here is worried. It's not like we'd sign a 38 year old past his prime (and prime wasn't good) goalie for more than the Vezina winner makes...
August 22, 2007 1:39 PM ET | Delete
Lombardi/Stoll are pretty even if you ask me, the funny thing is, Stoll (Flames draft pick) and Lombardi (Oilers draft pick) both re-entered the draft and ended up on the other side of Alberta. I would take Pisani over Nolan, he was the only Oiler who had a season worth talking about. Other than that, its all Flames. To Hemsky, the negotiations with Kipper will begin when he returns to Calgary from Finland, I expect him to re-up before the deadline somewhere in the neighbourhood of 5 yr 30 mil or more. Speaking of guys bolting, Pitkanen only signs a 1 year deal with the Oil on arrival? Sounds like you should be watching your own team. Good luck when you have to rely on Matt-choo Garon for a starter...
August 22, 2007 1:56 PM ET | Delete
don't worry oiler fans, rebuilding can be .... fun (look no further than the flames of the 90s :P)
August 22, 2007 2:02 PM ET | Delete
Oh Calgary fans... Just about enough to make you sick.. with all your lovely stats that mean crap at the end of the day, it really comes down to play on the ice. The way I see it if your happy getting beat out in the first round, and that is considered success for you team, so be it, Calgary rules. I for one was not happy with Edm's performance last year and would never prop my team up on a pedistol and say how great there just becuase we made it to the playoffs. If you can actually say Calgary is better this year than last... I am the one that laughs at you. I can show many teams where players have less points than calgary but went farther in the playoffs. So I ask you What does points mean? and is that the determining factor on whether a team is good or bad...? Go back to your stats table you idiot. Stats only work when the work to your advantage. And last year they worked for Calgary. What about Stanely Cups my friend. Let me guess you don't want to talk about that, because it doesn't suit your perfect world. I hope calgary has another great year and your team scores many goals and many asissts and gets beat out in the playoffs if you make it... Edm is building for first round losses. That simply isn't good enough for the city of Champions

i think everyone knows that in the average flames fan's world the nhl's recent history went something like this:1) the league started up in 19892) it then took a 15 year hiatus and started fresh in 20043) the 2005 and 2006 seasons were awesome but the playoffs were cancelledno offence but your team has played as heartless and gutless as a team can be in the playoffs. seems like as good a reason as any two try again with the same group.
August 22, 2007 2:13 PM ET | Delete
my post got messed up. i think everyone knows the average flames fan thinks that the nhl started in 1989, took a 15 year hiatus and started again in 2004, the 2005 and 2006 seasons were awesome but the playoffs got cancelled. no offence but your team played as heartless and gutless as a team can in the playoffs. seems as good a reason as any to try again with the same group. i apologize for the double post but the formatting is wonky in my first one.
August 22, 2007 2:37 PM ET | Delete
Ha ha..all I can say is that you are absolutely right. The flames are a better team right now! You guys have all your superstars and core still in tact. Regeher, phaneuf, Iginla, Tanguay, Kipper. So in theory this is your year. If you don't win this year you guys are a bust. Because then the bridge falls apart. At least with the Oilers they have so much potential and rookies and core players to build around.(Not too mention the most dedicateds G.M in the leaugue. So I will leave it at this although you have the better team this year on paper, if you don't win the big cup this year you will never win it. The oilers have another 5 years of being a contender with all of our jewels. Hemsky, cogliano, Gagner, Penner, Stoll, Pitkanen, Smid, Gilbert, Shremp...and so on.I'm going to laugh my ass off when you relaize even this year every team in the west got better except the Flames. Nolan..hahahahah
August 22, 2007 3:40 PM ET | Delete
Slats, Regehr re-signed for multi year, sarich signed for multi year, iginla re-signed for multi year... one kipper and dion are signed it's going to be very tough to find a better core than that.
August 22, 2007 3:48 PM ET | Delete
I agree. So Iginla is locked up and Regeher is locked up. What about Dion and Kipper?? Kipper will command 6million and Dion is fair to say 4million??? So between 5 players if all resigned you have commited over 25million dollars in salary. This doesn't even factor in guys like Tanguay. What I'm saying is Sutter has done a wonderful job and I think the Flames are contenders. However long term if you cant win the cup year after year with these 5 guys the organization will need a shake up....
August 22, 2007 4:03 PM ET | Delete
With Sourray and Pitkanen the Oilers got worse... -53 combined last year... I don't think it was ever that cold in Edmonton
August 22, 2007 4:08 PM ET | Delete
I agree the Oil future looks good with the prospects listed above in slats post. Without a doubt. After the Oil run in 06 you guys were already set for a decade of good teams, but your GM faltered and left you hanging. So now, after a half-year re-build and likely this year as well, yes, you will be looking good. But I just want to counter with our core of young studs including, Phaneuf, Lombardi, Moss, Boyd, Taratukhin, Giordano, Chucko, Irving, Pelech, Backstrom... the Flamers are solid too in that regard... add to that our two best players re-signing for well under market value and we look really good. But, back to back busts in the post season don't have me pencilling our team in for another run. They have to prove they can get some of their heart back. Anyone who thinks we didn't improve for the third season straight needs to give their head a shake, but right now, it doesn't mean anything.
August 22, 2007 4:43 PM ET | Delete
Man, its nice to see people post their un-biased opinions. HA! Langkow or Horcoff, is pretty much a toss up. Horcs is a solid two way player, plays his heart out every night. Pisani is better than Nolan, you cannot debate that... And as for Stoll, you obviously have not watched him play if you think you might rather have Lombardi. The rest I can give you, with the exception of what you said about Sykora. We didn't let him go because we couldn't pay him, in fact he wanted to stay. When Nylander's agent agreed to sign here, Sykora became expendable. If it weren't for Nylander screwing Lowe, Sykora would still be here.
August 22, 2007 4:47 PM ET | Delete
Good job Suttter...he signed Regher and Iginla...but last time I looked Phaneuf is an RFA after this season and Kipperthe UFA isn't interested in talking...saneopinion how is that considered 'getting the job done' when two of the four YOU listed isn't signed yet. The flames are hooped in one of two ways: 1. They lose their entire team in Kipper to UFA. Toast. OR 2. They become the Canadian version of the Tampa Bay Lightning and sign all of the four you mentioned but can't afford anything else! Pick your poison...
August 22, 2007 4:55 PM ET | Delete
I think either way you look at it, I love the fact that their are great fans out their. Whether you support Flames or Oilers, All I know is I look forward to the next few years of the BOA. Also I'm happy that teams can't make a trip to Alberta and expect an easy win. If the Flames don't get you the Oilers will, and vise versa. I'm a true Oilers fan and I believe in this team, however I also feel that the Flames are a great organization as well. So enough with the banter and we shall let the players decide who will be the better team.
August 22, 2007 5:09 PM ET | Delete
yeah slats, I was actually very critical of the forecasters who had the Oiler pegged so low for the upcoming season. Shazaam, I think the biggest block to getting kipper is the lackof a fax machine or any phones on the lake he's fishing on. If you want to talk about tying up money in a few players maybe you should take the time to check out Hemsky, Souray, Penner, Roloson. When you're done doing that look at the difference in salary vs. point production, it's very slanted and in my opinion that is getting the job done. Dion isn't going anywhere, he'd be one of those 5 1st round pick offer sheet players and there's only one g.m. that crazy...and he lost 3 of them this year.
August 22, 2007 5:21 PM ET | Delete
i would like to commend everyone in this thread for being civil. a friendly rivalry never hurt anyone. the 8 games this year should be interesting and a lot more competitive than last year. i'm happy with the team the oilers are starting the season with. i have a feeling nilsson is going to produce some decent numbers this year. the limited games he played for us last year (would have been more but the call up rules prohibited that), he definitely looked like he belonged in the big leagues.
August 22, 2007 5:22 PM ET | Delete
Thanks Heed, I think my next one will be on prospects which will be a tougher test for the Flames organization.
August 22, 2007 5:52 PM ET | Delete
The Oilers gave up one 1st rounder for Penner - not three....there are no more 5 first round pick compensations in this CBA - the max is 4.
August 22, 2007 5:56 PM ET | Delete
someone could actually offer Phaneuf over $5million per season under the current cap and only surrender 2 firsts, a second, and a third.
August 22, 2007 5:59 PM ET | Delete
only?? That's one way of putting it. But you are correct thanks, a first second and third rounder are penner's offer sheet compensation.
August 22, 2007 6:40 PM ET | Delete
I think Calgary takes the offense category but I'd probably have to give the Souray/Pitkanen one to the Oilers. But still, that's only two guys. Sorry, Calgary kind of has you, at this point anyway...
August 22, 2007 7:14 PM ET | Delete
The Flames have it all.....except heart. Iginla is signed so expect his stats to fall, just like the year after he signed his last contract. Phaneuff has been exposed for what he is.....gutless. Watching him the last half of last year was embarassing. Kiprusoff will be gone after this season....to a contender and to a place where he can market himself. Calgary is too small market for a superstar goalie. Mike Keenan has done nothing. He won the cup in New York only because it was stacked with ex-Oilers. Sarich Aucoin and Nolan. WOW these are the guys to put us over the top. I don't know what GM's have to do with which team is better.
August 22, 2007 7:41 PM ET | Delete
Yes only....it's a great way of putting it....name one trade that involved a player for picks that worked out better for the team receiving the picks....fact is...if you don't draft in the top 5ish, most picks are crapshoots....Look at it this way....if the Oilers had gone after a player like Penner in 2002 and gave up a 1st 2nd, and 3rd....they gave up Pouliotte, Colin McDonald and Mikail Zukov.....in 2003 they give up Shremp, Tesliuk, and maybe Brent...in 2004 Cogliano, Chorney, and Syvret.......etc...we're talking one decent prospect in every year and the rest are on the bubble......it sounds much more risky than it actually is
August 22, 2007 9:05 PM ET | Delete
This blog was the lamest attempt at getting fans here (Edmonton) riled up. Management could have offered Sykora abucket of oranges and a new sweater and he would have stayed, and Nylander no one will ever really know if he broke his word or not, fact is the Oilers are a better team for having NOT signed him. Speaking of bad acquisitions Amonte, Langkow, Tanguay all guys that were acquired to play with Iginla and can't.. Your lucky you have the character in the dressing room with Iginla because if he were gone, you'd be going through the same slanderous Sh** Edmonton fans are going through. Iggy is a premiere player in a sub-premiere region and does a very good job as ambassador for that region.. Pray to the hockey god/deity that you never lose him, it WILL be the last season you make the play offs..
August 22, 2007 10:08 PM ET | Delete
Mckeevs...Do know Sykora? I wonder if Pronger and Smyth like Oranges as well??
August 23, 2007 1:29 AM ET | Delete
To the fellow that started the blog good job best laugh I've had all day.Edmonton/Calgary is one of the best sports rivalries in existence. It makes it fun to watch the stats. As someone already pointed out if the Flames don't do it this year it will become harder each subsequent year. One question I have for the flames fans is why the inconsistency with the flames last year?
