Is Something In the Works??

Today Darryl Sutter confirmed he is keeping the 2009 first round pick, he had the option of giving phoenix this pick or the 2010 pick in the Jokinen deal. This draft is generally considered deeper than next years draft which some are saying could be as bad as the '99 draft but having said that is the 20th over all pick going to be that great?
At number 20 the Flames could get lucky and still have a left wing prospect named Carter Ashton available but at 6'4" and 212 lbs I have a feeling he will be gone so why keep the pick? Calgary does not have a second round pick, that is with L.A. but they do have two fourth round picks and a third round pick. Sutter has usually traded away picks to move down in the draft but given the depth of this draft ends at around the 15th or so pick you have to wonder if he is not considering moving up. How much a move up would depend on what he was giving up along with the first pick this year, could you not foresee a possibility of the first round pick moving along with a high profile player for a 1st round this year or next year?
There is also the possibility there is a deal worked out right now where they give up their first round pick this year for a player, this is all speculation of course, but if they do then you would have to think that the player would be substantial.
Why would Sutter break from tradition? Why would he make a move like this? Because the Flames have a very small window to win a cup with a core that is just getting older and the young talent being just inexpensive enough to ice a solid line up. In addition Sutter has been, in addition to a guy who trades down, also a guy who likes the big splash at the draft and that could mean some exciting stuff for Flames fans on June 26th.

Sutter will trade the pick for immediate help. I think we all know it and Sutter does too, that his leash is getting shorter.
I don't think the leash is getting shorter, I think Sutter is expecting to be picking later in next years draft. Before sutter made the jokinen trade he watched every top prospect for the flames, and felt they were deep enough to be able to afford to give up a 1st rounder. Next years draft seems like the Taylor hall show.... and htere is no other name which i have heard menchened. If the Jay bo for Dion roumours are true, maybe Calgary and flordia swap 1st rounders as well.
Guys...I'm not sure I understand the Dion for Jaybo talk...Jaybo is a free agent isn't he?Is it me or does Dion for a chance to talk to a guy who may not come to Calgary seem like a steep price to pay?I think Sutter is up to something...not sure what though.
Dion for Jaybo's rights is one of the stupidest rumors I have ever read on this site and thats saying something. I'm glad to hear Sutter is keeping his 1st this year though; that's what I suspected he'd do. I'm not going to pretend I know much about the draft but the Flames need more forwards in the prospect pool. However, if the right guy isn't available at the flames spot, perhaps they would trade down again since they have so few top 90 picks the next two years. Going to be interesting.

Dion for Jay Bo aint happening. Confirmed by Ken King himself. Well at least he said they are not "Shopping" Dion around because 29 other teams would make an offer.

Personally, I would have suspected that any Dion for J-bo trade would occur more along the lines of a sign and trade than any deal just for his rights.Anything besides a sign and trade would make absolutely ZERO sense for Calgary.Then again, I take 99% of the trade rumors I hear here and just discard them, because once they surface here, odds are that a rumor is as close to reality as they will ever be.
I hope Calgary keeps trading their picks.
