One has to wonder, with a defensive corps half signed to long term contracts and a glut of great young defensive prospects, where and when will the Flames fit them in?
Sarich signed until June of 2012
Phaneuf and Bouwmeester signed June of 2014
Regehr signed until June of 2013
That leaves two spots.
Giordano and Pardy, who most would say are two young and good (and cheap) defensemen, round out the top six. They are signed for two more years respectively.
Now you look at the Defense Calgary has that are NHL ready, even if that would be in the sixth man capacity:
Pelech
Kronwall
Now look at the glut of Defense that are probably not ready this season but next season:
Aulie
Baldwin
Negrin
Palin
Then you have the two seasons away guys:
Seabrook
Brodie
That is 8 guys who will be ready within three years while the Flames have spots for 7 defensemen on the roster and only two spots that will be available for the 2011-2012 season.
I think it's obvious that something has to give, every organization loves depth but having this kind of depth on D and a very shallow pool on the scoring front... well last time I checked two plus two still equaled four and you would expect a move at some point in the next season to address scoring talent. The talent up front for the Flames organization literally consists of three major prospects, Backlund, Nemisz and Wahl. The rest of the prospects are just checkers with a varying amount of scoring ability. If I can see it then Sutter sure can!
The other possibility is moving a major cog on the D, Sarich proved in the playoffs for two years that he can shine when he is called upon, say what you want about Phanuef but at 50 points he was having a bad year... in addition during the playoffs he showed that he can play D as well. Bouwmeester and Regehr are absolute rocks, you don't move defense like that.
From my standpoint it will be very interesting to see what Calgary does to get scoring depth over the next two season...unless anyone wants checking forwards?? Sutter will unload them!

If all the guys you mentioned (from Pelech down to Brodie) will be NHL-calibre D-men in the next 2 years, it will be a very nice problem to have. Then you can move whoever is deemed expendable and upgrade the offense if needed. But for this year, I suspect we're going to stay pat and concentrate on getting back to a solid defensive structure...and that means starting the best D we can ice! None of our top 6 will be traded - certainly not before the season starts!
If Sutter can find someone to take Sarich and his inflated contract then I say do it. There is plenty of depth there and the flames need more scoring!!
Flames are fine on scoring. I'm done defending it. Sarich may be overpaid slightly but there are worse contracts out there. Love commodore but not for anything north of 2mill.
Yes are scoring will be fine. You dont need one line of superstars (which we have half of anyway in Olli and Igg) you need a team of people who contribute every game (which we also have). People seem to also forget about Lanks in the lineup, this guy can put up some numbers and we have seen it in Calgary. Very solid team in every way. Good job Sutter!!!! GO FLAMES
Well said! People seem to forget that we had 2 - 30 goal scorers, and 3 - 20 goal scorers not including Camaleri. Only some of the best teams can boats that fact. I am in now way worried about the flames ability to produce goals.
I imagine if a young guy comes up and suprises, it will quickly open the door to a trade. Several teams have has some suprises on D over the past couple years, I'm sure Sutter hashis fingures crossed. (ie.Gilbert
The squad as it stands has enough scoring to be effective but I think it would be an over statment to say we had depth at scoring like we do at Defense. It just stands to reason that if you are areally strong in one area that you would move assests to achieve more of a balance.
...and now Stolman, if I had to guess I would suggest Giordano as a mover.
