So Dawes, a winger who makes $850,000.00 a year will be bought out if he is not claimed by another team. His cap hit will be $141,667.00 if he is bought out, for two seasons.

This is odd because really he was producing for what his salary was, if not exceeding it.

Ales Kotalik will not be bought out, all signs point to Management saying in not so many words, "You can play in the AHL and ride buses with kids or you can opt out and we'll loan you to the KHL...Up to you."

So here we are and it looks like the Flames are clearing space, right now around just shy of 4 million if they bury Kotalik and waive Dawes, so why?

The back up has been signed for $500,000.00.

That leaves the Flames with around $9 Million in Cap room. They need at least four wingers and a center, although it appears Sutter will have that opportunity to be the 4th line guy. Now if you were to project Sutter at Around $650,000.00 at center and think White will receive around 3 million, you are left with 5.5 million approx. in cap space to sign a few wingers.

This is not enough, Cap room has to take into account injury time and call ups etc.

The Flames, by the numbers at least, will have to make at least one trade that moves salary, preferably for a center or winger to facilitate signing a couple wingers.

Ken King's forum with the Season Ticket Holders was interesting- The Flames will be making major moves shortly, within the next couple days, and it was intimated at one point that he wouldn't be opposed to Tanguay coming back.

It's speculated amongst agents Tanguay would receive 1.9-2.3 million per season.

Higgins is saying basically thanks but no thanks, I know his agent said he would keep a line open but I'll take odds he ends up somewhere else, no interest in the West from that guy. Too bad...he can score empty net goals like no one else.

Flames will have a new building downtown in 3-4 years.... I think they should call it SO Center, everyone would think it stood for shut out center but we'd know better...

Dont understand Dawes move. Trade is only choice which is why we simply cant be in on Kovalchuk. If its not Spezza can anything fit with Philly for Carter without Kipper involved?

Philly initally talking to Hamius, why? Could they want a dman we have other than JBO? White? Sarich Leiland?

It boggles my mind that Sutter couldn't find a taker for a 14 goal scoring 850,000 winger in his mid 20's. How is it possible that there's absolutely no market for this guy?

jtommy- sometimes the waiver process initiates trade talks like the edm-pho one today. Teams might not have been aware he was available, if he gets taken then there is 850000 of needed cap sopace. Kevin- I wish!!! Holmgren and sutter are close but i don't know...

New arena is overdue. I would rather have Tanguay's skill than Higgins broken body/stone hands anyway, considering they will both be paid the same. These waiver moves/cheap backup speak to bigger plan...so far, I am intrigued...though there were better (Moss) buyout options than Dawes.

Sane why would Sutter give Ericksson a 500K 1 way deal with Leland/Shantz in the wings? I like Eriksson, great move but what a waste of a #1 round pick.

Neither Shantz or Irving are deemed ready for backup duty, unless we want a repeat of McE. Not to mention, this guy is 1/2 the price of Leland, and won't stop those guys from developing (ie playing). Nothing gets developed sitting on the bench.

So if Ericksson looks good

Kipper for Carter and sign one of the many UFA goalies.

Irving went to the echl after losing the job to shantz in the ahl last year and typically goalies take a long time to develop. Shantz and Keetley will battle for the AHL unless there's a trade, Eriksson gives them one year to develop and to prove himself.

Doesnt make drafting goalies in the 1st round or 2nd very wise, especially the low value they are getting here these days. getting nervous Sutter cant pull trigger on a deal.

To bad about Versteeg I really thought he would have been a nice fit in Calgary. Anyway, a big D-man has to go. If it is Sarich we wont get much back I dont think, so sign Tangs and trade Regehr for a top six winger.

What about Roy on Buff @ 4.0M yr next 2 years. Would he be a #1 line candidate to go after, Buff have lots of cap room
July 1, 2010 11:28 AM ET | Delete
Shantz is a UFA, not likely to return. Irving is more than double at about 1.3... And Dawes was left go because he's a liability while on the ice at a position where the Flames are stacked. He would have had a checking role, not a scoring role, most likely on the 4th line. Lol on Higgins... he really could find the empty cage!

errr isn't the new backup Karlsson not Eriksson? Or did i miss something haha

Tanguay was a no lose, like it! Not high on Savard deal even if he said yes, which I doubt. Can we flip him to Ottawa for Spezza somehow??
July 1, 2010 3:56 PM ET | Delete
OMG say it aint so!! Not Jokinen again. Maybe for Tanguay numbers not what numbers 960 are saying. say it aint so pleaseee

No way that you could flip Savard for Spezza... He's five years older, concussed and is more reliant on linemates to produce than Spezza.

I think chances of getting Carter are better than Spezza
