What makes me sick??

Mats Sundin. Yeah that's right I said it, a lot of us have been thinking it too. I know the media and hockey forums have to discuss something during the off season but by this point we should be discussing how Koivu and Sundin will play together or about his heroic return to the leafs...or even the up coming gomez trade since Sundin signed in N.Y.

Instead we get to read about how he is still deciding if he wants to play hockey...for ten million dollars. hmmm. If the love of the game isn't enough to get you on skates by training camp than surely ten million American green backs is right?? right?? That's what?? Three trillian kroners or whatever Mats come on!!

So this guy is supposed to bring "intangibles" along with his meager 70-80 points... there's better players getting paid less who WANT to play. What leadership qualities is he invoking right now in his fellow players? To be Selfish? That should help. I respect a guy who wants to retire and spend time with his family, there's nothing wrong with that...just say it.

His fellow players are waiting for him to decide where he wants to play if at all so they can go get contracts of their own with whatevers left. That's nice of him.

Lets say he does come back, no training camp? No work in the off season? How long until your favorite team is paying him ten million to watch from the injured reserved list?? Is it too much to ask to at least pretend like you're a professional athlete? Key word "professional".

Get off it Mats, for no other reason than we are all sick of it.

S>O>

P.S. yes I recognize the irony of writting about him.

Tough question - I don't think he can play against the Leafs - so it might be hard for him to return. He's rich enough to buy IKEA. Its really if he wants to Captain the Leafs boat one more time...Who knows - maybe this year will be the Golden Voyage of Sundin, not Sundin and the eye of the tiger....

I find his attitude extremely selfish. Any team that signs him will probably have to send 1-2 players away to make some cap space etc. I regret those guys.

I agree with you about 90%. The Sundin saga has been more annoying than the Brett Favre business because it's lasted for exponentially longer. The media is to blame for much of it. I totally disagree that Mats should make a decision if he's not ready to do so. He doesn't owe it to the NHL, it's teams, or its players to make a decision. All of the currently un-signed Free Agents could ask for less money and/or played better last season to prove that they were worth getting right away. I don't find anything unprofessional about being indecisive as a free agent. I wish he would make up his mind so I don't have to hear and read about the b.s. anymore, but he has earned being a free agent in his late 30's that's still so good that much of the NHL is holding his breath for an answer. If it were me, my life directions (and about $10 million) are exponentially more important than the convenience of anybody else, so I'd decide as soon as I could, but not a minute before. Good blog.

Claude- Thanks for the good words, what is unprofessional isn't that he is taking time but he's not even staying in shape in case he returns, for an owner paying 10 mil they might find that unprofessional since that is his profession. I agree that free agent players should take their time and weigh options but wow...this guy is getting up to Yashin stage with public opinion.

well written. Couldn't have said it better myself. I hope he retires now.

How is he being unprofessional? He is not the one driving up his own interest! The teams who want him are doing that! Mats is at a point in his career where he can either retire or continue to play. How is that any different to any other profession? A teacher who is in their retirement year faces the same problem." Do I want to prepare for another year or is my mind and body just no longer into it." sometimes it takes a long time give up something you love to do, even though you are not sure if you want to do it any more. Maybe when you are at the same point in your own career you can better appreciate what he is going through!!

Well Martind...I have yet to meet a teacher who turned their cheek on 10 mil.

Get your facts straight, Sundin trains everyday, just not on ice. He's taking a break from his regular annual routine of on-ice August conditioning because he's trying to simulate retirement to test if he misses the game. That said, as much as I've defended Sundin endlessly, even I'm not happy that he won't show up to training camp on time. I don't respect the Teemu Selanne half season routine. How's a January FA signing any better than a trade deadline acquisition that he was so against. The guy needs to play a full season or retire.

By the way trying to insult him by calling 70-80 points meager is pretty dumb, besides Iglina the Flames don't have a point per game player on their roster. The Flames could really use the guy if they had the capspace.

But he is a free agent. It's his right to be a free agent. He's in shape, just not skating. A fan can be upset with a GM for leaving that 10 million unspent on what could have already been in place, but there's no point being mad at a guy for not taking a job he isn't sure he wants.

toughhockeyfan, I'm not trying to correct you in saying the 70-80 point merger is dumb, but Sundin got 78 points in 74 games last year so maybe he is a a little over a point per game player now and wouldnt say he would improve much more.. As for the whole Sundin free agent frenzy, I wouldn't say its all Sundin's fault because the media can blow things up that isn't news. Although, I am personally sick of hearing a new Sundin story that is the exact same to the one a week before.. Good blog saneopinion.

is there any way that a limitation on when a player can join a team (ie. first month of season). I don't think it's fair when players like selanne/neidermayer/foresberg joined a team simply for a playoff run. i for one would very much welcome such a rule.

he should just hang it up

It's not a question of whether or not he's being professional...he's professional if he decides to work....if not, there is nothing to talk about....What surprises me the most is his apparent lack of drive to finally claim a Cup...if the opportunity to sign with a contender doesn't spark his jock strap July 1 then he truly doesn't have his heart in it anymore and is not worth the 7-10 million a year he may command...A Sundin with a burning desire to win is definitely worth the effort...but, he doesn't have it. Translation: He's done.....

I'm not insulting his production of 70-80 points, which he is good for every year (that he trains and tries) but am relating it to 10 mil which in my opinion is Crosby, A.O. money... AND THEY SHOW UP FOR CAMP!
September 4, 2008 7:02 PM ET | Delete
I can't deny he isn't worth 10 million a season. But I also think there is no chance of him signing for 10 million a season, thats just Mike Gillis doing a stupid move. I'd peg his worth at about $5-6.5 million/year. I think Montreal is offering a fair contract.

your an idiot, all your doing is ranting and throwing your bullshit opionons around, not everything is about money, not only that but its certainly not his fault teams are holding out for him, in reality it should be his fault if he waits to long and every one has used up cap space and he has nowhere to play...but NO , since the guy has enough integrity to take the time and decide if his heart or whatever is in it people give him shit....your fucked
