My son and I were at a park day the other day and he was playing road hockey in which he scored many goals and killed us and wore me to a frazzle. Now I am writing this blog about how much I am out of shape I am writing because of what took place at the game. One of the younger boys was playing to who had his stick up to high and my son (dougstr) was trying to teach him to keep his stick down, trying to teach him the rules about hockey. He was trying to let the boy know that he could hurt the other children with his high stick. It made realize how most of Pro NHL players could use the same lesson, about keeping their sticks down. Sometimes I think its the children who are the better example than the players. How many times are we seeing a high sticking penalty with a player using his stick somewhere else instead of the ice. How can the N.H.L. get any respect from the outside world if the players can't not respect each other.
The sticking is not the only problem, its also the spearing or the cheap shots and it usually from the same players, who do this over and over again. I love the game and great fan of this game, but I am always trying to explain to my friends or wife why this game is Canada's game after she is watching a dirty hit, or a cheap shot or sticking incident. How can we sell this game while our hockey players have no respect for its players. I am tired watching players smack each other over the head and hearing their coaches complain over the suspensions. I don't know what bugs me more the act it self or listening to the player trying rationalize to the world why he kicked the crap out of the other players. I know penalties are going to happen but this attempting to injure has to stop because sooner or later it will go to far, which it has already. Sometimes I think I should have my son talk to these players about acting like adults. I think my son is more mature than some of these players.
Which leads my back my son and how proud of him I was about trying to show the other kids how to play fairly its really to bad that the NHL players union hasn't learned the same lesson. I just love playing a good road hockey game with kids because I know I am not going get jabbed or hit with a high stick I am just know I am going to have kids smiling and having fun and you know what there is nothing better than seeing a kid with a smile on his face the way its suppose to be . I watched one of the best game I have seen all year in the Memorial Cup Champion Ship Game In which the Giants beat the Tiger 3-1 and you know what there were no stick incidents in that game hence it was fun to watch. Now how often does that happen .
