HISTORY
Have you ever lost your girlfriend to your best friend? Have you ever had your legs waxed? Has you mom asked you “Why can’t you be more like your brother?” Has your boss or your wife told you to get up and go do something?
Think back so you can have an idea on how these two cities feel about each other. I remember in my teens and early twenties that I didn’t care how we did as long as we beat the Oilers. I am sure that our cousins to the North would agree with that
and that they would be fine as long as their Oilers beat Calgary. It reminds me of a love hate relationship without the love.
I remember the times I would be watching the Oilers Stanley Cup parade. It was like getting kicked in the head over and over again. It wasn’t so bad that we lost but the fact that we lost to the Oilers was disheartening to say the least. It was like the Flames would find another way to loose. Being a Flames’ fan was so frustrating as we watched them lose year after year. What made it worse was hearing the excuses the coaches made up for the Flames losing. You know the cliché ones: “We have to put in the full 60 minutes” or my personal favorite “We have to take care of our own zone and the rest will take of its self.” The only entertaining fact would be is watching the coach mumble and fumble feeble the words why we lost again.
What was really amazing is that year after year, the fans would start getting excited and think to themselves this would be the year the Flames go all the way. However, year after year, we would end up being disappointed again.
With that in mind, I thought it would be great to go over some of the very bitter memories and some very happy ones from a Flames fan point of view. As I look back at it, I regret not watching it as a fan and not enjoying it as a fan, instead of putting so much stress into it.
1987-88
During the Regular Season, the Flames were the best team in the NHL. However, as we all know, the playoffs are definitely a different season.
This season proved to be no different as the Flames were completely dominated by the Oil. Wayne proved why he was the best player in the NHL as he scored the biggest goal of the series in Game 2, which ended up being an overtime winner. It was a tragic loss for the Flames as they never seemed to recover.
I sat there watching in horror wondering why I even wasted my time. The Flames still had not learned that the regular season means nothing if you are not able to back it up in the playoffs.
90-91
This might have been one of the best series I had ever seen.
The Oilers took a 3-1 series lead and looked to have the series in the bag. Game Five ended in the Flames favor 5-3 and Game 6 ended on an overtime goal scored by Theo Flury when he intercepted a Messier and went in on a breakaway and scored on Fuhr.
Game 7 was also a classic. The Flames blew a three goal lead and the Oilers had a one goal lead late in the game. The Flames would tie it to send the game into overtime. Tikkanen scored the winning goal on a great shot over Vernon’s shoulder.
This year was heart breaking but at least they gave it their all.
85-86
Edmonton fans can turn away if they want to. This series was a classic and the Flames were huge underdogs.
The Flames played their best game of the series defeating the oilers 4-1. In Game two, the Flames blew a huge lead and then ended up tying it late. However, Edmonton would end up winning the game in OT.
The Flames had total control of the series when Edmonton went into Calgary and killed them 7-4. This was Edmonton’s best game of the series.
In Game seven, the Flames took a 2-0 lead in the first period. However, the second period belonged to the Oilers, who dominated the Flames from pillar to post. Of course what happened in the third period was the famous Steve Smith mistake.
After the game, I watched the sports channel and saw those thousands of fans screaming, asking Smith to be our mayor. I was thinking lets do the election first and then elect him as our mayor.
I probably could have mentioned a lot more and I could have made this blog last all night. I could have mentioned the epic battle of vernie vs Furhr or I could have went on and on about the many battles between Calgary’s defense and Edmonton's power forwards.
I could have mentioned the smack talk between the two cities. For example, what is the difference between a bra and the Flames? The answer: the bra has two cups.
Well that is the final word. There is no other game that matches the Flames vs. Oilers in intensity.
Thanks for the deep insight into the great Battle(s) of Alberta... even here on the East Coast of the USA, we look forward to them. Well done!
Flames, I think you have the same problem as my ex-wife. You're living in the past. Sweep them away and look forward. LOL.Great post, I really enjoyed it. Thanx
Flames - great work ! I love the passion that the battle of Alberta brings out in fans of both teams. Special to say the least. I remember watching Gretz win that game 2 in 87-88. I was in college and we had it on the big screen in the student center - Boston U was a big hockey school. The way he played during that series typifies why he was and forever will be the Great One. Nice blog! SYF
great job flames. you did a wonderful job highlighting the fact that the biggest goal scored by the flames in the battle of alberta was scored by steve smith. just jokes but keep up the good work.
great job again buddy! Very good article. I remember the Steve Smith goal clearly. ironic that Smith played for the Flames after that!!
Great Blog. Way to bring to a closure. Just like Leafer said...It is the past. Now lets look forward.
Great finish to a great blog ! Your stuff is always such a good read, and very well put together. Love the passion and knowledge in your writing , keep up the good work !
