If someone was to ask me about the performance from the Calgary Flames, I would have to say it was the most impressive victory of the season. Why? because every aspect of the Flames games was at its best. What do I mean? Well, let me explain.
Power Play
The Flames scored two powerplay goals, it was nice to see Bert score in the first period and Dion score a powerplay goal in the second period. The powerplay needs to be sucessful, with the number of penalties being called in the new NHL. You can spend 1/3 of your game on special teams. Tonight, the powerplay controlled the puck and was very dangerous.
Penalty Kill / Not Taking Silly Penalties
The Flames played a very disciplined game tonight, taking only 2 minors tonight, They killed both off very proficiently and looked very good doing it. They never got out of position, and handed the pressure with ease. They were terrific tonight.
The Defensive Zone Play
The Flames' defense was rock solid Robin Regher was a rock tonight. He stood up to the Coyotes' forwards constantly. He was not alone; Sarich was excellent tonight. In fact, each of the dmen was steady. But this is not all; the forwards were actually coming back to help in the zone. Everyone was paying the price to get the puck out of the zone. This goes right with one of my favorite hockey sayings - if you take care of your own end, the offense will take care of itself.
Goatending
Kipper was very steady, including making a great save in the 2nd period off Hanzal. The save could have been a major turning point if KIpper did not make that save. The Coyotes would have been right back into the game.
Conclusion
There you have it. The Flames had their game on, they basically dominated the Coyotes. By far the best game of the season. It all starts again with their defensive game.
Flamestr
Let's hope the momentum carries!!!
Kipper has been solid in all three wins on the streak. The rest of the team has been building off of that. Lets keep it going and win against a NW rival on Tuesday.
When the Flames are on they look quite good as long as Kipper holds up the only questiion is can Keenan get them playing like this consistantly. I hope so ours is a a fun rivalry especially if both teams play well this year. Here's to a first round match-up and keeping the SCF streak alive.
Kipper is too good to call him a "has been". He will come back as strong as ever if the "D" comes up big on the second chances.
