Don Cherry decides that Alexander Ovechkin went overboard on his celebration. I really do not understand why this is an issue. What is wrong with a player celebrating scoring their 50th goal? Pretending his stick is hot when scoring his 50th goal for the third straight year seems to have become a crime. I say it's great for the NHL to have a superstar with character. Character brings charisma and charisma brings the fans. The fans of course bring dollars, which means an improvement in the bottom line for the owners. I have said any kind of publicity that the players bring in can only help. So I say good on Alexander. Have to love his energy and “umph”.
The league continues to hold out penalties and suspensions for goonery, which is great. Unless it's superstars like Malkin who did basically the same hit as Ben Eager who gets three games, and Malkin only gets a slap on the wrist. What really irritates me is that this is going to make it look like the league has double standards. There can be an argument that it was not the same hit on Kopitar, but I say what is good for goose is good for the gander. I love Malkin, but if you do the crime, you must do the time. Lets not lose focus guys. Be consistent no matter who is guilty of the offense.
Lets give out congrats to the Bruins as they clinch the East this week. While we are at it, what a statement with a 4-1 win over the Bruins! They are the beast in the east. It's about time they got some love from everyone. The Bruins have a great goalie in Mr. Thomas, who deserves some votes for the Vezna trophie. He has been very consistent. They have some terrific players, led by Chara and Savard and one of the best young players in the game, Phil Kessel.
Then we have Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and their name is the Calgary Flames. The Flames played one of their worst games of the year, losing to the Blues. Yet their next game they come back and beat the Wings 5-3. A very confusing hockey team. Their defense seems to think that hockey games are optional for them. One win, one loss, seems to be their pattern Their last ten games 5-5. Like I say, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde showing their ugly faces.
Which leads me to the hottest team in the league, the Canucks, who are 7-2-1. This just in – Burrows, the player everyone hates, is becoming a very valuable player to the team. He is a spark plug who puts energy into the team every time he takes a shift. But I can attest that he is a major pain in the butt to the opposition. The Canucks are simply outstanding playing at home. They do not lose very often.
Let's talk about the amazing performance of ref'ing lately. The consistency is almost scary, and yes I am being facetious. The league really has to figure out what is a penalty, and what is a two minute penalty, and what deserves a major. I have seen many games where I wonder what exactly the refs are seeing. They must be more consistent. The players need to know what is not a penalty and what isn't. Too many blatant mistakes. Please, as a fan let me enjoy watching a game without noticing the referee.
I see Cherry's point, but would agree that it was not that bad. But where does it go from there? It is basically a slap to the opposing team. Not sure where it goes from here.
