Somebody should be hired to be a translator for the Calgary Flames General Manager Daryl Sutter. Seriously, we should develop a new language called Suttereze. If we had a translator, then we could understand than what the Flames General Manager means. Daryl has been telling everyone that will listen that he is not trading any of his good players. Does he really mean is not going to trade any of his players? Seriously? Another theory is that maybe he's playing the General Manager Game. Simply put, the offers he is getting for his players are not enough. Maybe Daryl does not want to give away his players for nothing. What Daryl Sutter said can be perceived in so many different ways by so many different people. Therein lies the problem of figuring out what Sutter means.
Judging by what has happened to the Calgary Flames so far this season, they are the same team, except for a new back-up goalie. But how many of us can actually take Daryl Sutter at his word? Or better yet, assume that you know what he means? You do not want me to break out up the word assume, do you? But I will tell you this: if Daryl does not trade any of his so-called best players, I am not sure he can improve his team. Everyone has heard the old adage that you have to give something to get something. So unless Mr. Sutter can snow all of the other general managers, the Calgary Flames will have a hard time improving the team without trading one of their assets.
If you ask most people, they know the gentlemen meant when he said his best players. They would tell you they are the core. But when you think about who are the best players on the Calgary Flames, they are not necessarily the core. When you think of the best players, you have to pencil in Iginla, and Kipper, who are part of the core. But you also have to pencil in White, Gio, Bourque, and even – dare I say - Eric Nystrom. Did you notice I missed some of the core? So if Daryl Sutter is thinking like I am, at least some of the core is available.
Which players are the core? The consensus is that Iggy, Kipper, Regehr, and Jbo are the core. I have talked to some people who have put Stajan, Bourque, and Lankow there too. And therein lies the problem. Matt Stajan as the number one center? Matt has never been proven as a number one center, and this may be too big of a challenge for him. Another issue is that with the emergence of Backlund, Langkow could be the third line center. Daymond would be one of the most expensive third line centers in the NHL.
Let's discuss the backup goaltending issue this season. Does it really matter who the Flames have as back-up? They will just play Kipper 70 games and run him ragged. What's my point? Why not find some rest this year for Kipper and break the cycle? My pick would be Antero Niittymaki. I feel he is the best one out there in the free-agent market. The only problem with him is that he would be hard to fit under the cap. But I guarantee he would play more often for the Flames.
One thing about Sutter, he never shows his hand, yet he's been known to do some major deals on draft day. One year picking up Tanguay, and last year, picking up Cammy. I truly think that the Flames will be trying to get a first-round pick and saving some salary. Yes, I know what he said, and frankly I put more stock in what Daryl has done in the past than in what he says. The assets to get this done are Regehr, Jbo, or Hagman, and some prospects to sweeten the deal. Anyone notice that the Flames have been signing some prospects lately? There may be more than one reason for that. Trying to find new homes for Jbo and Langkow may be hard to do, due to their NTC contracts and salaries.
Other assets will be not as hard to dump, but it would not be as profitable for the Flames to do so, if you know what I mean. Their salaries would not bring as much relief to the cap issues of the Flames, and of course I am talking about Nigel Dawes, David Moss, and Adam Pardy. Did you notice I did not bring up Corey Sarich? That is because I am one of the few who loves the way he plays. I still think he can be a valuable asset to the Flames this season. Sutter can deny it all he wants, but he knows this team needs some tinkering and a facelift. Daryl is very good at s. The problem is that 29 other sharks are just as good at doing their jobs..
Until next time, take care.
Randy
Nitty would be great, but would be an expensive backup. Shantz can do the job cheap enough. I will let Sutter keep his poker face up in hopes he is practicing double speak as he always done. I think he is ringing phones off the hook to be prepared on draft day, d-day for us.
I completly agree he is going to be busy Nitty would be awesome.
Sutter is a goof
He never shows his hand, because he's holding 7-2 offsuit.Nice read Flame..
Thanks Travis always appreciate your support.
i dont think Sutter will trade JBo he has too much pride to admit he made a mistake look at the Jokinen deal then goes around and trade him for crap (kotallik)
I would take JBo off your hands, but it would also cost you Backlund... in return I think Fisher and Kuba would be sent your way.. Salaries don't match up in that trade but I think it would be good for JBo to be back in the East and Fish and Kuba need a change from Ottawa
I think Sutter is actually kind of obvious and never said he wouldn't trade his players, just that a first would cost one of them. He also said that they needed to make room for younger players who were ready. We have a center and a d ready so I guess we'll see!!
Riceroni, what a stupid trade. Never happen, like me saying we'll take Spezza
Karllson for Regher
It's a great trade IMO. You guys get out of the JBo contract and get Fisher and Kuba. Backlund would be the price to pay for the deal. I think both teams win on that proposal.
We dont want out of JBO's contract, we just want him to play the way he can Regher/Langkow for Spezza/Karllson
Are you stupid or something? And what are you doing on this website at 3:11 am (or I guess 1:11 am Calgary time) go to sleep or get a life
Just showing you what ur offer was like
You may be the only Flamer that wants JBo's contract... The Oilers will probably finish ahead of you this year and Sutter and Sutter will still be in power making it worse
Sutter will never change the way he talks to the media, and you can read what he says and take it any way you want but the truth is quite simple, the team as it is right now is nowhere near good enough. Another year like last with the same team and the same result will surly be DSutters last, and he knows that... So big changes are coming.
P.S. Riceroni your an idiot.... go blog with the other three Sens fans.
Ricer I dont think so. We have already what the Oil desperately need
a franchise player/Iggy/Kipper/JBO/ Oil will get theirs this weekend
Let's see what happens at the end of next season where our teams stand. The Sens will have a strong fan base in 5-10 years when the generation that was born while the Sens were in existence are working and able to afford season tickets. I am not worried about our numbers, we can only increase.
Riceroni, i'm not worried about Calgary's fan base haha. This city has money and the team has a very strong fan base. Also, your assesment of Jbo, and Backlunds worth for that matter is GROSSLY underrated.
So we're supposed to give up a top 2 defenceman and a top prospect for Kuba and Fisher? And you say "Backlund will make the deal work"?Even NHL10 wouldn't take that deal.
Riceroni, to put it simply... Jaybow's our top defenceman. If he's the piece that you want it will cost you Spezza. If you want Backlund to fill that hole in your lineup it will cost you an equally attractive prospect to replace Backlund in our system. Think Regin or Karlsson.
It's funny because all I heard all season long from Flame fans was that Bouwmeester was a bust and just wanted to get rid of him. Spezza (hopefully) is not getting traded by the Sens. It would be a bad idea.
No you didn't hear that all season because all season we had lots of other things to moan about, to be honest. J-Bo was not his best, by far but there is an adjustment period when you change from the only team and city, that are polar opposites in Florida to Calgary. Also a new coach with a very structured system. Mark it down he will be by far our BEST D this season.
Also I still hold firm on the fact that your a uneducated hockey fan spouting off about a team and players you obviously know very little about.

I agree. that is one of the worst trade proposals in some time. I would trade Backlund for Regin though.
I think I'd rather keep they playmaking centerman, at least until we have another viable option at center.
I agree that Bouwmeester is going to have a great year and want to steal him from you guys now that his value is at an all time low... that's all I was trying to say... Anyway, we all know your GM likes to make trades that favour the other team so is my offer really that bad? haha
Spezza/Karlson for Jbow/Backlund
JBO stays, watched him at a lot of games
He skates smooth, fast can be very transitional, reminds me of Niedermeyer. He will be our new face of the future, just got get him to be a little nastier.
