The Flames made a couple of transactions on the draft weekend that tell me that Sutter is beginning to retool the squad. First of all they traded Alex Tanguay along with their 5th rounder to the Montreal Canadians for first round pick this year and the 2nd next year.
Minutes later, they acquired LA Kings forward Michael Cammalleri and a 2nd rounder in the Conroy acquisition. In exchange, the Kings get the 17th pick and a 2nd from next year.
Now what Sutter pulled off in those picks is to make sure they don’t lose any picks in the first or 2nd rounds. He niftily got the 2nd rounder from this year back, and covered the 2nd rounder the Kings get next season by grabbing the Canadian's 2nd rounder for next season.
Now the financial aspect shows the real savvy of Sutter, which in essence gives the Flames an extra $2 million in cap room, giving the club the ability to go after a top 6 forward and a defensemen through trade or UFA signing.
That leads us to the fun part: Who are the Flames going after next? Are they going after a center or a winger? I like the idea of the them keeping Lombardi as the 2nd line center with Cammalleri (who can play all the forward positions) and moving Boyd to wing or Moss on the other wing. I would love the speed on that line. The first line would be Langkow and Iggy and the new UFA - I would like Andrew Brunette - on the left side.
It is always fun to try to figure out coaches next move -- which is impossible for us mere mortals to do, but hey; what else are we going to do in the off season? Yes, I like the savvy and logical thinking that Sutter did on the weekend. Getting the Flames extra cap space, and softening the blow of losing Tangs. My final grade for Sutter is A on the trades he did over the weekend. Like he cares on what I think.
I would like to comment on the classy Tanguay, who never went to the media and never complained about being here in Calgary. He was nothing but the most classy guy in a Flames jersey. He was nothing but a pure professional here in his stay in Calgary. I wish nothing but the best for Alex in future endeavors as a Hab.
I agree with you on Tanguay, and how classy he was. And how well Sutter handled the situation too - that they both agreed to trade him come summer. Tangs should be just fine on other team - I think he'll reach 80-points once again in Montreal. Where he probably won't be killing penalties half the season while someone like Nolan plays 22 minutes a night. [sighs]
Now to see what comes next and how it all works out in the upcoming season.
It'll be interesting to see how Sutter handles Cammalleri. If he signs Langkow then we have a fairly solid first two lines, but it complicates the cap situation because Cammalleri will be getting a raise after this year. If the Flames can unload some of their overpaid D-men the cap situation will be better but I still don't think they have enough money to make a huge splash on the UFA market this year. Maybe Sutter can surprise me again...I'd like Brunette here, or maybe Ruslan Fedotenko. I agree with what was said here though, good job as always Flamestr.
I say bravo to Sutter. He wanted something and he got it done. It helps having a guy like Tanguay with some value but no the less...

Lets let next year"s CAP issues sort themselves out next year. Besides, when Cammalleri is due for a raise next year, Aucoin's $4M, Warrener"s $2.5M, and Errikson's $1.5M will be off the books, if they don't already find some way off the teams payroll this year anyways. Warrener is a prime candidate for relocation or buy-out. Also, don'tbe too surprised if Cammalleri plays an awefull lot on the LW beside Langkow and Iggy, with Lombo centering Moss and Boyd, or a new winger. Also look for a combination of Cammalleri, Lombardi, and Boyd. Now that is speed!!!
Best blog you've written thus far Flamestr.
