There is only one thing on my mind. Well, two, but both basically stem from the same problem. I really kind of hoped that violence in the League would have at least cooled down for the playoffs. Well, to my disgust, there have been three major incidents, and probably could have been more.
The three major incidents that I am talking about during the playoffs are the ones involving Daniel Carcillo, Milan Lucic, and Michael Cammalleri. Now I want to discuss the first two episodes and then Mr. Milan Lucic’s wonderful display by itself.
First of all, let’s discuss the Cammy and Carcillo incidents, which were not exactly pretty. Players still seem to think that using their tools as weapons is acceptable. Both players used their blunt ends as weapons on opponents’ faces. Carcillo got a game for his handy work. Yet the NHL, for some reason, did not torch Mr. Cammalleri, who seems to have gotten of scott free for his handiwork.
Which leads to my second problem, that of double standards. It seems that the NHL has two standards for punishment. One for the grinders and the muscle, and another one for the more established players. There are continuous incidents where the bigger name gets the lesser penalty. I understand the sentiment that the players with a rep need to be dealt with, but I do have a concern that they give the stars players too much leeway in doing what they want. There has to consistent punishment, no matter who has done it. Don’t get me wrong, I love Cammy, but even the good guys must do the time when they do the crime.
Now let’s talk about Mr. Lucic giving dental services in the NHL now. I am sorry; I really get irritated when players continue to use sticks as a knee jerk self defense mechanism. Since when does Lucic need to defend himself with his stick? Last time I looked, he could handle himself just fine with his fists. I have no problem with players defending themselves, within reason. It’s using the stick as a weapon, putting it up into players faces, breaking it over their faces. This happens too much, and then they want to know why there is a penalty to pay; usually a suspension. Well, maybe it is because of your actions, players, please think.
Player of the week
The Canucks are playing fantastic right now, led by their all-powerful goalie, some guy named Roberto. This just in - he is good. The Canucks are the story of the playoffs, as they go for a sweep this week over the Blues, who have not played that badly. The Canucks have become Canada’s hope this season to bring the cup to the great white north.
Rant
One more comment that I have to feel has to be said on behalf of most Candians hockey fans. We do not condone booing a national anthem. I was appalled at the Canadians fans in Bell Center on Monday night. Let assure the American fans, I was personally as upset as you were, and let me personally offer you an apology for those fans who chose to boo your national anthem.
i guess you missed the game in st louis where they booed the Canadian anthem. Two wrongs don't make a right but you don't need to apologize.
I can't imagine St. Louis fans booing the Canadian Nat'l Anthem. They've never done it before. Booing anyone's Nat'l Anthem is classless. Montreal's been doing it for years.
What Lucic did was wrong...But he showed class to tell the media he was wrong for what he did. Great Read Flames...Gread game last night!
Waiting for Avery to get punished for his punch to Varlamov's head with less than 3 minutes to play last night.
That was utter garbage in Montreal. I love that city and always have a great time when I visit, but I hate to say it, as a Western Canadian, I wouldn't have expected any less from them.
also, do these fans realize they have a handful of players from the states on their roster?? or is all that mayo going to their heads?? haha sorry if that offended my friends went to canada not too long ago and said they put mayo on EVERYTHING and ANYTHING
Great blog. I agree, Refs and Discipline Committee are not applying a standard. It's the most frustrating thing.
Montreal Canadian fans have no class..period
Are they saying Boo, or Booourns?
