PHILADELPHIA ON NOTICE GIVE ME A BREAK

The other day when the NHL put Philly on notice, it really made me laugh. I mean, who are they kidding? Come on, they love every minute of this! They love publicity, whether it is bad or good. Is the NHL really upset with Philadelphia? Or are they rubbing their hands with glee?

Seriously, you really think the league is not licking their chops with all this publicity? I will answer my own question: Of course they are. Why, because everyone is talking about it? There are a lot of people talking about hockey, discussing whether the Flyers are continuing to push the buttons. Now the Flyers are sticking up their noses at the League by bringing up Downey. Downey is not known for his gentle play. So what do you think is going to happen now? Don not make me laugh! Of course they are going to get more viewers just to see if Downey is going to go berserk again. It is all about the numbers, the ratings, and trying to bring in the fans - or more importantly - the young fans. So this is why I think putting Philly under notice is hypocritical. Because in reality, what is the League going to do? The League loves the publicity. It is going to put the NHL on the map more.

WHAT THE LEAGUE SHOULD DO TO CLEAN UP THEIR ACT

MORE CONSISTENCY

This league has to be more consistent. I have seen more penalties where suspensions are warranted and yet were not issued. On the other end of the spectrum, I have seen them give the player almost a death penalty. I mean, it is so frustrating watching one player get so many games, and then another player getting no games or not enough. How are the players suppose to respect the process? I have also seen the League suspend more because the offense was against a superstar. Why should the player on the end of the hit have anything to do with the suspension? Then I have seen the suspension being delayed to see how badly the victim is injured. Why does it matter if the player gets injured? We are penalizing the offense, not the result. I would like to see the League give a black and white answer on this, no more grey area.

PLAYERS NEED TO TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY

The players need to start respecting each other more. They have to start thinking about what there doing. In my opinion, there are way too many hits to the head and attempts to injure. I just think that the players have to think about what they are doing. They must be held accountable.

SOCIETY IN GENERAL

This is where I am going to get slammed, and I know it, but I really think as a society we glorify the violence in hockey. We have a tendency to talk about the fight incidents. We seem to remember all the violence in the league. I just think maybe we need to remember that in most areas of life, fighting is not acceptable. Sometimes we end up encouraging these incidents by covering them more than needed.

CONCLUSION

Just a few observations that I have noticed in life. We have to remember this is a game. Let us try to savour the good things in life. We have to remember the good things: a goal, a save, or a pass. I sit and watch my son while he is looking at the game, seeing him smile to see a goal. Does it get better than that? It is really too bad the players lose sight of that once in a while.

Do not forget the important things in life.
