It seems that it is us against the world. Yeah, the Thrashers are the SE Division champs, but the Tampa Bay Lightning is getting more respect against a 2nd seeded Devils than the Thrashers are getting against a 6th seeded Rangers team. This blog is not bashing the Rangers. I respect what they have and how they got to playoffs. It seems that the majority of the sports w...

Missing the playoffs for the first time in years, the Flyers need to begin looking towards their future. They've already addressed this somewhat in-season by trading away veterans for younger players and draft picks. Don't Underestimate ANY TEAM

I try to steer clear of playoff predictions, because anybody who loves this sport knows that you can never accurately assume what's going to happen in a hockey game. Yet, somehow I am magically drawn to articles discussing all facets of the upcoming postseason, as the thirst for playoff excitement that brews in my stomach every April is too much to ignore. So of course...

Rangers win game one...

So time ticked down as I tore the hair out of my head, and somehow the Rangers eeked out a win in Atlanta. After playing well the first two periods, the Rangers lost their edge and the Thrashers dominated the third period. Still, throughout the entire game whenever the Blueshirts would extend their lead, it was only a matter of time before they let Atlanta get the goal b...
Ok, yes, I am a Rangers fan and this will probably be disregarded by most as a bias whine by someone who cannot see his team play Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs but I'm going to write about it anyway because frankly, bias or not, I think I'm right. God I love playoff hockey. Right before the playoffs started, my wife gave birth to our first child, a baby daughter named Abby (actually went into labor at the Canes vs. Caps game…I am guessing Abby was a bit annoyed at Johnny Grahame for letting in 3 goals on 6 shots, and wanted to give him a piece of her mind)…well, those that have kids know that the sleep is spora...

Wow...that was a short string Lehtonen was on....It doesnt matter though as Atlanta's defense isnt good enough to beat the rangers in a 7 game series unless Brodeur was in net. The Rangers pulled out a win today in a tightly contested game, beating the Atlanta Thrashers 2-1. I felt the Rangers had the better of the play for the whole game tonight. The first Sean Avery goal was a fluke, but well deserved by Avery, who was easily the best player of the game. He had more shots than anyone else on the team, assisted on Shanahan's game-winner, and ...

Three topics to touch on briefly. 1. I'm thoroughly excited for the Rangers-Thrashers game tonight. It will be interesting to see how the Rangers respond to being back at home. Chris Gratton was dealt to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a 2nd round pick in 07, or 08(Florida's option) according to TSN. Ohlund for Ryder This trade makes sense to me. The Canadiens are not going to sign Souray (and why would they). Ohlund could come in at a good price and replace Souray. Stopping 140 of 143 shots during the 4 game stretch, the Flyers are making some big time noise in the Eastern Conference, with Biron providing A+ goaltending to aid the cause. Panthers and the word team

As if it is some ambiguous meaning, the Panthers quite simply do not understand the word "team". It still amazes me on some nights when I turn on the game, I find myself with a huge headache. Watching what seems like any other ordinary ...

Tonight's game at the Igloo vs. the Atlanta Thrashers will be a true test to see whether the Pens are ready to turn the corner and start heading up the Eastern Conference ladder, up where many hockey pundits predicted they'd be this year. What a difference a game makes. Two nights after Marc-Andre Fleury was yanked after allowing two arguably soft goals in the first period in Ottawa, Penguins coach Michel Therrien came right back with Fleury back at home tonight vs. the Atlanta Thrashers. You can probably see where this is going but bear with me. I beg you. Recently we've had some issues with blown calls. Serious issues and seriously blown calls. The one with Detroit and San Jose was unfortunate, admittedly, but let's be reasonable; one point will not lose them the President's Trophy. It will take at least two. But I digress... The incident in Atla...
Philippe Boucher, according to the Ticket, is out for 3 weeks with a partially seperated left shoulder. He previously had been out with a right shoulder injury. I love Boucher, but if he's going to be out for 3 more weeks how is this team going to be able to get full chemistry before the playoffs? Bad news.
After having tied the game with minutes to go in the third period, the Toronto Maple Leafs get the butt end of the stick on a non call which allowed the New Jersey Devils to score the game winning goal on goaltender Vesa Toskala. What a dissapointment this is. The Leafs were in position to get a minimum of 1 point and maybe more but due to this poor non call by the off...
We all know there is a slight rumble behind the scenes between GM Garth Snow and coach Ted Nolan. The discrepancy of DP's status/sitting. Perhaps even the moving of Simon. Sure, an eyebrow or two got raised. But to construe any rumble as the beginnings of large discord seems to be premature. TSN did not help as last night, the braintrust of Bob MacKenzie (who I do love), a...
Last night, after the Flames' one-period effort of a 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals, I wrote that the next day's game against the Atlanta Thrashers was a must win for the Calgary Flames. And what did they do? Why, blow a 3-0 lead and lose 6-4 to the 14th ranked team in the East, of course. It seemed, early on, that the Flames were listening to this 17-year-old'...
Alright, so with 10 games left in the season and Sundin possibly on the shelf for at least one game, this is how I figure things will come down. I have read the predictions. Last night's 6-3 Hawk victory in Columbus was gratifying for a few reasons: snapping a 4-game losing streak, keeping the club's faint playoff hopes alive and icing an intriguing new set of lines. First of all, no surprise, neither Nikolai Khabibulin nor Marty Havlat were in the line-up. More on that in a moment. Last night's first three lines were: Ladd-Toews-Byfu...

Ovechkin is not done

Ok. Ovechkin hit 60 goals with 6 games left. Cool. Now we can all relax. He's juiced the most he possibly could have out of this season. C'mon, am I right?? Nope! So, heres how I look at it. Ovechkin is the top scorer since the lockout. He's the best goal scorer, statistically, since Mario Lemieux put up 69 goals in 1995-96. But thats only so far. Could, hypothetical...
After the recent 174-foot goal Vesa Toskala allowed against the Islanders, many non-Leafs fans may question the 31 year old goaltender, but that would be a mistake if you're not aware what kind of season he's endured with the Blue and White. To begin, when the Leafs acquired Vesa Toskala in the summer, they were not expecting top five quality goaltending. Fact is, Tosk...
Remember last year when the Sens were the favorite...but Brian Murray was playing the underdog card with his team and the media? Well, it worked. As recently reported per TSN, Blake is open to the possibility of being traded this summer. There's no question that the Leafs had a very poor season and have spent too much money on players that were not worth the cash, Blake being one of them. WHAT GETS BOUWMEESTER TO NY?

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
If this rumor of the Rangers exploring the possibility of brining Jay Bouwmeester to NY progresses, than I just want to get some feed back for both fan bases. I think the deal makes a lot of sense for both teams. The Panthers could use some young depth players to mesh with their young rising core. I would hate to loose him but Florida could ask for Brandon Dubinky wh...
According to Eklund, theres a chance that the Florida Panthers may be making Jay Bowmeester available. He is in RFA who could command about 5.5 mil on the market. The Sabres have not had a true Number 1 d-man since the days of Mike Ramsey. With the glut of forwards the Sabres have, especially on the wings, I propose this deal: Jay Bouwmeester for Jason Pominville. ...
As if it wasn't a big enough concern that the team I have all but worshiped for my whole life has missed the playoffs for 3 consecutive years, now I find myself worrying about the whole management situation that is an on-going mess in Toronto. Olli Jokinen could be just what the Buffalo Sabres need. While everyone is focused on Buffalo's biggest, glaring needs this offseason - at defense and back-up goalie, with the forwards stocked up - the Sabres should do all in their power to acquire O.J. When I read that Florida is looking for a first round pick and two young players, my interest intensified. Buffalo...
After Cliff Fletcher traded the Leafs' 7th overall pick -- along with conditional draft picks -- to the New York Islanders for their 5th overall selection, I had my suspicions he was after the highly coveted Russian sniper, Nikita Filatov. Looking into the Panthers draft day move that brought in two more young defenseman, they may be gearing up for a deal. The Flyers have announced that they have come to terms with RFA defenseman Randy Jones. The deal will leave the team with a $2.75 million cap hit and Jones will receive $2.5 million this year and $3 million next year. The reaction to the moves made by the Maple Leafs on July 1st has been understandably mixed. Dir Mr. Sather, I am further from a New York Rangers fan than Vancouverites in 1994, but fire Tom Renney. Really? Lets go back to that era when you quoted that if I had the spending abilities the New York Rangers had I would win the Stanley Cup every year. Well you did for seven years until the salary cap, and you sucked! You are probably against the salary ca...

The Biggest Test So Far

Check out Saturday's scoreboard... Panthers...7-2 losers to the Devils Sabres...2-0 losers to the Islanders Hurricanes...5-3 losers on 4 goals by the Thrashers in the 3rd period Aside from the Rangers crushing a reeling Avalanche team 6-1, just about everything that could go right for the Penguins did go right for the Penguins. Tomorrow the Pens face a Dallas St...
And yet, so accurate. I freaking HATE the Flyers. This isn't your garden-variety hate, like your 8 year old who hates peas. It's a deep-seated hatred, as in when the Flyers plane crashes at the end of my block on their way out of Buffalo, I immediately run down to the end of my block to: A....make sure it really happened, and B.....dance on the wreckage. And ye...
Obviously not literally......but it kind of feels that way. This Sabres team that looked to have found themselves last week in wins over the Canadiens and Coyotes has looked nothing like a playoff team in the last two outings. They've fallen to four points out of eighth place, currently held by tonight's opponent, the Florida Panthers. And with each of the teams ahead...
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say something that many of you will find to be absolutely ludicrous: Glen Sather has done a fantastic job since 07. Yes, THAT Sather. I will go as far to say that Sather made only two glaring post-lockout mistakes: signing TWO free agent centers in the summer of 07 and inking Redden. In the 07 offseason, Sather probably shoul...
Over the last 3 games, Sean Avery has been the best player on the Rangers. Not all-star goalie Henrik Lundqvist who wrote history by sealing his 4th consecutive 30 win season in his fourth season in the NHL. The Thrashers have had some shotty goaltending in the early half of the regular season with people doubting the teams goalies. The season has ended for the Thrashers, with most fans going home dissapointed once again. Some things did improve, but a lot more things stayed broken and I'm here to help good ol' DW out. As I've bemoaned in a previous blog and something that is an acknowledged belief of all Rangers fans, Glen Sather has painted the team into a real corner as it pertains to the salary cap. NEW Offseason Game Plan

Posted Thursday | Comments 0
With Brashear and Gaborik signed to contracts, as it stands today, the Rangers have about $13.7 million of cap space to work with. This is what should happen with that money if we want to be Stanley Cup contenders. -Sign the RFA's. This is a reasonable amount for each RFA. Zherdev-2 years $3.25million per yr. Higgins-4 years $2 million per yr. Korpikoski-1 year $...
This all began about 4 weeks ago, when Dany Heatley requested to be traded out of Ottawa. He gave the Senators a list of teams he wished to be traded to. On that list, was the Rangers, Sharks, Kings, Bruins, Blues, Red Wings, Black Hawks, and Canucks. There was a ton of interest in the sniper, but Sens GM Bryan Murray claimed he "hadn't recieved a leginimate offer" for Hea...
I know it is still early in the off-season, there are still lots of UFA signings and trades to be made plus all of the RFA’s need to be dealt with, but I thought it was still a good time to work on the “Off-Season Progress Reports for every team. I am only going to include the impact additions and subtractions. Today I start with the Eastern Conference, South Eastern D...
Alexei Kovalev, formerly of the Habs, is the best remaining NHL free agent of the crop. Although it was widely reported on July 1 that he had agreed to a 2-year deal with Montreal with an annual salary of $4.4 or $4.5 million, this is clearly not the case. Monitreal has assembled their first line (Gomez/Gionta/Cammalleri) through free agency, and their is no room for Koval...
It is very difficult to predict how a team will perform during a season. I think this holds true for the New York Rangers. These were good acquisitions but the signing of Donald Brashear for $1.4 million ...
With the recent signings of Cam Barker and Kris Versteeg to nearly identical 3 year contracts worth more than $9 million each, it appears that the Hawks have dodged the proverbial bullet with regards to the NHLPA grievance over the Hawks handling of the RFA tender notices. Why is Zherdev looking for more money. $3.25 million is enough for an enigmatic forward who plays his hardest for about 1/4 of the games. For the many faithful readers (maybe 2 or 3 in all) of my blog posts I apologize for not reacting to the monumentally critical signing of RW Ales Kotalik by the Rangers immediately upon the announcement. By mid-afternoon yesterday, I had a savvy blog constructed for my inaugural post here on HockeyBuzz. It was all about the Hawks' cap plight, and included the pros and cons of the players whose names have been tossed around in all of the trade commotion. It was a well thought-out, snappy piece of writing. I even incorporated Bluto Blutarsky quotes. Solid gold. Then ...

My 1st annual NHL Mock Draft

Posted Thursday | Comments 3
This years NHL Draft is one of the most intresting in years. Over the last few years, the number one pick was pretty much a forgone conclusion. Ovechkin in 04, Crosby in 05, Johnson in 06, Kane 07, Stamkos 08, and last year John Tavares going #1, everyone knew that was the pick for the whole season. This year is different as the drama at the top of the board this year of c...
As you all know by now, on day 1 of the draft Habs GM Pierre Gauthier traded up for the 22nd pick to take towering defencemen Jarred Tinordi. Let's now take a look at who the Habs picked on day 2. Pick #113: Mark MacMillan MacMillan is a 6'0", 150 pound, 18 year old forward from the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the BCHL. During the 2009/2010 season, MacMillan tallie...

These are all opinions that are written on here, and we’re all entitled to them, and yes, I do read everyone's comments. I, in good conscious, can’t blame injuries for the poor results this season. Over the course of the year, Eklund has been posting rumors that Guy Boucher may be headed to Montreal to take the head coaching job there. BTB columnist Mike Stuart takes a look at the situation and explains why he thinks Boucher will be in Tampa next year and for a long time. Last night Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers skated to a 3-2 victory at Scotia Bank Place in Ottawa to force a game 7 in their series with the Senators. The top seed in the East fought back from a deflating shutout loss at home in Game 5 and an early 1-0 deficit in game 6. The Atlantic Division champs had some help from an undisciplined Ottawa team who took several crucia...

No Freddy the Fog again!?!

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
As usual, Fred Shero was not voted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. I certainly am not surprised by this since I don't think they'll ever enshrine Fred into the Hall of Fame. I heard there are some people highly opposed to his enshrinement. I guess it has to do with the whole "Broad Street Bullies" era of the Flyers. I was a small kid at the time and don't remember a l...
As we get closer to Sunday fans cannot seem to contain their excitement, expectations and fears. It is that time of the year again. The draft has concluded and each team's fanbase awaits news from the front about who their team is pursuing. Free agency will be upon us. For some teams, there is new found money to spend. Exits from the playoffs put strain on GMs to rethink ...
As I woke up this morning from my drunken stupor the night before, at around 9:30am, I began checking Twitter and the rumor mill for early news on Parise and Suter. Sure enough, around 11am, Dave Molinari, Pens beat writer for the Post Gazette, tweeted that the Penguins are "officially out" on Zach Parise. And by lunch time that was confirmed when Mike Russo, Wild ...
By now, I'm sure that you all have heard that Zach Parise & Ryan Suter chose the Minnesota Wild. And to further complicate things for the Pens, they allowed Steve "Sully" Sullivan to walk away, and sign a one year deal in Phoenix. This certainly leaves Ray Shero in quite the predicament, as he needs to find a top-6 winger to play alongside Sidney Crosby. A lo...

As the NHL lockout continues to drag on, there isn't much hockey news here in America that is really worth writing about. The AHL and many other minor and junior leagues are playing out their seasons as usual but are harder for many people in certain areas to attend. On the heels of last nights election, I was in a bit of a patriotic mood and decided to do another hock...

Cherry checkmates Fehr

Don Cherry is making headlines these days by saying that the NHLPA should be put to a vote on the latest offer that the NHL submitted to the PA. Of course, Fehr is not likely to do it, but when we see why, the reasons are suspect. The reasons not to put things to a vote are as follows: 1. Lose respectability from other players and get chastised for opposition. 2. Und...

Yesterday’s game... Wow, what can I say about that game in Montreal for the Sabres? Nothing good. It was an abomination, and too be completely honest, this was a long time coming. How can I say this? Easily. I’ve been watching the Sabres play this lazy style of defense for a long time. When Galchenyuk waltzed between all 5 Sabres on the ice, slid a pass to Eller...

Maybe Don Cherry was right when he boldly stated that the Leafs new toughness is the reason for a much steadier and confident game play by the young team. I can remember thinking so many times last year..."IF Colton Orr were here that guy wouldn't be hacking Kessel to ice everytime he touched the puck". And when you look at the 1-0 loss to the bruins this year it was a c...

I know that there’s a lot of buzz surrounding the Sabres right now. Personally, I’m a little miffed by this. However, I can understand why Sabres fans are very excited with the upcoming games. Either way, it will be interesting to see if Chicago can make any adjustments to help them out of the sleeper hold...
