Thanks to Ek and Hockeybuzz for this addition to the best hockey site in the world! As I sit on the morning of our third trip seaching for the cup I have mixed emotions. While neither of these guys will score a goal this post season (yes I know it’s possible but highly improbable) they can, without a doubt, determine how far their teams go. San Jose will start the series with Evgeni Nabakov between the pipes. The former Calder Trophy winner is one of the top back stops in the NHL and can be a huge difference maker in games. TSN.CA ...

after seeing his Scott Hartnell's knee to knee take out of Johnthan Cheechoo, i hope this wake's up the anti-fighting crowd in NHL. Hartnell disgraceful hit on Cheechoo was dirty and thugish. A late game rally by the Nashville Predators set up a thrilling finish in game #1 of the Western Conference quarterfinals between the Preds and the Sharks. San Jose held a 4-2 lead with 10:00 to go in the 3rd but 2 goals in the last 7 minutes by Alex Radulov's 2nd of the game and J.P Dumonts 2nd of the game with just under a minute to go sent the game to overtime. As a Canadian I was able to watch Sens-Pens and Preds-Sharks early tonight. I have to say I was very disappointed to see that the referees went back to last fall's calls. I agree that clutching and grabbing needs to go in the game, but a majority of the calls made in those two games tonight were absolutely ridiculous. Favourite Multiple OT Game

With another great multiple overtime game in the bag, what is your most memorable multiple OT game? I'll have to side with game 3 in the 2nd round last season with the Sharks leading the series 2-0 heading into the game. This game proved to be the turnaround for the Oil who rolled off 7 consecutive wins after this game. The bar we were watching at asked us to leav...

Unbelievable. Jaw dropping. What else can I say? This is my first blog ; there will be plenty of time to complain later, to get angry, bite, stir some s***, ask questions, but not tonight. There's a magic feeling each year to Day 1 of the Playoffs, and there are games that do nothing else but confirm this magic. As many were ready for Episode 1 of the "He saved the N...
If any word describes tonight, it is the word draining. Physical, emotional, and mentally just a draining game. If the fans and media are drained, I can only imagine what it must be like for both teams right now. That was a classic game for the Nashville Predator history books. Even though the Preds lost, there is still much to be positive about: 1. Coming back ...
Ok that was sarcasm. Every year, I think I forget just how good playoff hockey is. The playoffs are only one day old, and we've already seen a double OT game, followed up by a Quadruple OT game. (I started writing this blog during the second OT assuming the game would end soon.) We watched San Jose lose last years leading goal scorer, and then lose a 2 goal lead in the ...

After enduring two weak efforted playoff series by the Predators the last two seasons I’ve finally seen in person what “Playoff Hockey” really means. Can you believe how the Canuck/Star game ended? How many games that go into 3+ overtimes end on a nice goal? I mean really.....Hank is not a very likely hero as he barely scores any goals...but a nice looking goal? Same with the Shark victory over the Preds, great goal in overtime....not common but I am glad it happened. Lets hope day 2 will be as good!
I was doing great watching the games downstairs (On the nice TV). Although the Pens vs. Sens early match up wasn't what I thought it would be, the later games really were starting to heat up. I was riveted by the Sharks vs. Preds game late in the 3rd period. I was thrilled when my old buddy J.P. Dumont tied the game to send to overtime. WOW! Funny, because it almost s...

They always say that rivalries are born and forged in the fiery pits of the playoffs. With the Sharks and the Predators, this is certainly the case. As of now, this is still unannounced by the Sharks org, but the following players seem to have been released from the NHL Training Camp: D-51-Walsh D-65-Joslin D-70-Evans G-33-Dakers F-28-Packard F-38-Valette F-40-Armstrong F-60-Raduns This would leave 18 forwards, 9 defenders, and 3 goaltenders in camp. The Sharks travel to Calgary tonight to take on the Flames. San Jose will be looking to keep the Flames offense watered down and their defense on their toes. This past weekend my co-horts and I got together and drew out our Canucks tickets. I managed to snatch this evenings pre-season contest against the Sharks. Although, I was not impressed with the fact that it is pre-season, I am rather intrigued to see some of the notable prospects that the Canucks have to offer this season. Namely, Mayson Raymond. I am quite pleased th...
The season opener approaches, and the Sharks announce a total of 8 players being re-assigned to Worcester (AHL) this week. None of these roster reductions really surprised me, they're just talented players who need more time to develop and mature before skating in the "Big Show". However there are two rookies who are making their mark this pre-season, Torrey Mitchell a...
Two youngsters trying to make the Sharks NHL roster suffered setbacks in a shootout loss to the Calgary Flames Tuesday. In the first period, forward Tomas Plihal was hit along the boards by Flame David Hale. While the severity of the injury of the injury to Plihal's shoulder was not immediately known, he did not return to the game. More to come as it's known, but it's...
Unlike the game less than a week ago in San Jose, tonight's matchup between the Sharks and Canucks did not feature the fisticuffs and ejections that played a role in the earlier matchup. The excellent goaltending of Roberto Luongo, however, was once again on display for all to see as Luongo went head to head with Sharks youngster Thomas Greiss. While Luongo was perfect...
The San Jose Sharks have found themselves in a tough place. A good tough place though. The Sharks roster still has some trimming to be done, however, who will stay and who will go? Obviously you can't begin the season with 28 centers just because they all looked good in the preseason. A complete team needs defense as well. You have your locked in guys such as K Mac, Carle,...

Craig Rivet missed the majority of contact drills today, as he did yesterday, only coming out to skate with the power skating coach at the end of practice. He is definitely working very hard...

San Jose gets to 23 !

The Sharks have narrowed the roster down to 23, with some strategic use of the IR. Alexi Semenov, Brad Norton, and Thomas Plihal were put on IR to cut the 26 man squad to 23 for opening night. All 3 in my opinion should have been sent to Worcester simply because they just don't have the "IT" that is needed to crack this line-up. So as for the line up, it looks very solid, ...

We are at mid-season and the team thus far has performed well. The expectations for this team were through the roof at the start of the season, picked by most sports publications to win the cup. If you compare the performance up to this point with the early predictions for the team, you will see they are a little below where they planned to be. However the team continues t...

Weekly thoughts and predictions. http://flyerflies.com/blogs/Buts/ enjoy
Against a team that you can't give excuses for losing to, the Sharks put in a very lazy game against the Desert Dogs on Tuesday coming up on the losing end, 5-3. Trust me, the score makes the game look a lot closer than it was. I'll admit, I did not get to see the first period as the game started at 6:30pm here in California and I was still at work, but less than a m...
Before we get to the game, an update on Ryane Clowe. He skated (yesterday, I believe) for 25 minutes by himself, but Ron Wilson said that he won't be ready until March. "He won't be ready until March at the earliest," Ron Wilson told Emmons. "He's got to build up his strength. We're not going to risk him. Obviously, we could use him, but we've been getting by without hi...

Stars at home in San Jose!

Long time, no write...but I had to throw in my two cents on the ridiculous non-call last night and the recaps from the San Jose Sharks Staff (website) and the AP. What a joke!!! Rivet's hit on Morrow at the end of the 1st was a clear-cut, textbook boarding penalty. Yet, neither official made the call and at least one of them was starring straight at them! I thought one...
Yup, we all know what nees to be done. This team; players, coaches, and management all need to a good long look at each other and decide what changes need to be done now to get better. The Sharks are not going to win the Stanley Cup this year at this rate, and if they want to make an attempt at it this year or even next year, we need changes. The changes are not a ne...
Heading into tonight's game against the Blackhawks, the Sharks have put in a string of poor efforts. On a homestand that is very important in the middle of the season, the Sharks shave stubmled out of the gates. Hopefully tonight they can put it all together tonight and put in a good 60 minute effort. There have been many things missing from the Sharks' game so far on this...

One thing that struck me during the first period of last night's Hawks-Sharks tilt, is that whether or not Al Cimaglia, myself or anyone else thinks the Hawks are a playoff team, the Hawks themselves think they are a playoff team. That matters. And that is a credit to the youthful exuberance of the players, along with Denis Savard and his staff. The Hawks came out flyin...
In a previous blog, I stated that playing San Jose was a better measure of the Hawks' playoff-worthiness than the Hawks' previous four opponents. And in some ways, so is Columbus, who the Hawks face off against tonight at the U.C. With San Jose, it was more a question of: if the Hawks win, then yes, they should be considered a serious playoff contender. But if they ...

Blue Jackets Trade Jody Shelley

To say that it was inevitable is an understatement. Tonight, the inevitable became a reality. The Blue Jackets traded long-time fan favorite and noted pugilist Jody Shelley to the San Jose Sharks for a 6th-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft. Not a glorious return, but seemingly a good bargain for both sides. Not a huge financial gain for the Blue Jackets[/b...

It's definitely seemed quiet in Blackhawk Nation of late. After Wednesday's pathetic 6-3 loss to an even more-injured (than the Hawks) Avalanche club, the Blackhawks have settled in Silicon Valley for tonight's tilt against the Sharks and another two day rest following that. But some things have changed. The scathing remarks from Denis Savard have become quite positi...

In last night's 3-2 shootout loss to San Jose, Denis Savard made a real head-scratcher of a decision, sending out Cam Barker as the Hawks' shooter on a do or die try in the shootout. If he made it, the Hawks' stayed alive for another round; if he didn't, they lost. And he was sent out ahead of Tuomo Ruutu, Martin St. Pierre and Yanic Perreault. He didn't make it. An...

The Calgary Flames opened their big five game Pacific roadtrip with a dramatic 4-3 overtime win over the San Jose Sharks. Jarome Iginla scored the winner with 25 seconds left on the clock, one-timing a nice pass from Phaneuf from the left circle. So the tides have apparently turned! Media and Sharks' fans alike have come alive and decided that San Jose is going to become the 3rd team ever to come back from a 0-3 hole. And they just might do so ... but I highly doubt it. The difference in this series is that Dallas has lost the last 2 games after taking a 3-0 lead, where as against Anaheim, they had leads of 2-0 ...
After that amazing come from behind win on Friday over Dallas 3-2 are now back to where we all left off. The Sharks are again back to game 6 in the second round. The real test. The San Jose Sharks and all who love this team are right back to where the past 2 seasons have ended. The game 6. Game 5 was amazing in San Jose, but as soon as the first puck is dropped to...

Well, put that one in the books. You can tell the real fans from the "I'm just watching because the Mavs aren't playing" fans this morning by the red, cracked eyes. It took four overtimes in Game 6, but the Stars finally finished off the Sharks at 1:30 am Central with a 2-1 victory. 3rd Season begins

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
I was sitting and talking with a few friends about the NHL yesterday. One thing we could all agree on was that the Sharks, Red Wings and Boston all were the most consistant teams through the course of the season. All were legitimate contenders for the Presidents Trophy for most, if not the entire year. But that was it....thats all we agreed upon...the rest ...
EASTERN CONFERENCE #1 Boston Bruins vs. #8 Montreal Canadiens Boston thoroughly dominated the season series 5-1. Montreal is quite banged up. Top defensemen Alexei Markov is going to miss at least the first 3 games of the series for the Habs and no one knows how much they are going to get out of offensive minded Mathieu Schneider. Boston has some young unproven talen...

Lets see, where do I begin. Lets start with Devils/Canes series. Can game 6 possibly be better than the first 5? The answer is yes, but we'll see tonight. Looks like the captain is in tonight, Holik "The Caveman" out. Chicago/Calgar...
Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton were reunited on the top line for San Jose in game five, and it worked! It has been pointed out in the media that Todd McLellan called his two s...
Gonna be a long night since its obvious the league is really "hoping" for a game 7. Three penalties in the first 10 minutes. The directive has been issued! Ducks better really play smart and strong. I see a lot of calls to send off Big Joe and Patty. What about the rest of the team? Well fellow losers, we come to that time of year again where we expect to turn off the hockey games early. Who should San Jose keep?

This is only my second blog on this site and has to be short and sweet since I do not have much time. I think there are only three players that I would be really upset to see go and they are: 1 - Dan Boyle: He is my choice for Captain next...
Ryane Clowe is apparently being shopped around by San Jose, and he is just the sort of guy who would fit into Brian Burke's mold for Toronto. He's going to be 27 this year. At 6' 2" 225lbs, a player who goes to the front of the net, does hit and often scores in bunches. He has played first and second line duties and is very aware of checking responsibilities. Plus he h...
He’s been highly touted as the “best goaltender outside of the NHL” and has been rumoured to be coming over to the NHL to play next season. The 24 year-old has apparently been in contact with the Maple Leafs, Avalanche, Sharks, and Stars. We still don’t know where he’s going to end up, and it’s almost July 1st. Now, I’ve watched as much tape as I could possib...
So Rob Blake has re-signed in San Jose for 1 year, 3.5 million dollars. I think it's a good deal. He is now making about the same as Vlasic and Ehrhoff, 1 million more than Doug Murray, and half as much as Dan Boyle. This basically solidifies the San Jose defense with the following top 6 guys: Boyle Blake Ehrhoff Vlasic Murray Lukowich I also think Blak...

What a frustrating game last night. As I mentioned in my last post, the Bruins are severely undermanned (not in quantity, but quality) and will need to be extremely opportunistic in order to win games. The Sharks just played that much better. It seems that the best players from each team stepped up. Just look at the scoresheet…Setoguchi, Couture, Marleau, Zetterberg, Datsyuk. Several articles f...
The Refs Eric Engels wrote about the differences in officiating between the regular season and the playoffs. He made a good point about how the refs seemed to have put their whistles away during some of these playoff games. I’m going to put these up for fun and feel free to rip me a new one but in my fantasy g.m. brain here is what I would do given what the Flames have to work with right now. Erixon going to the Rangers for two 2nd round picks changed the game because now they have all of the picks they would have anyway, if there was a silver lining to that fiasco this is it. So armed with...
With all the hoopla surrounding the need for a 1st line centre in Toronto, a key idea is being missed. It's true: Brian Burke needs to acquire a legitimate, 1st-line centre this offseason if he wants any shot at even making the playoffs this year. However, I'd like to point out, that the Leafs are still missing a much-needed cog to any playoff teams chances: A p...
Brent Burns and his Zoo will be moving from the snowy confines of Minnesota to the sandy paradise of California but he will be leaving the Wild with a kings ransom of picks and players for his services. First off I absolutely love this trade. Chuck Fletcher took a highly skilled, albeit erratic player in Brent Burns on an expiring contract and turned him into a Top 6 fo...
So I guess we will start out with the end of our playoffs. To me these play offs were just ok. I never felt like the sharks were going to dominate a series. We almost dominated the wings but we all know how that went. To me the sharks were relying on their size and puck possession as the only offense. This can work well but isn't the hardest thing to defend when you kn...

State of the San Jose Sharks

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
The dust is starting to settle. The pain of another baffling 'shot-yourselves-in-the-foot' playoff ouster is starting to subside. We're not even to training camp yet, but we've had a chance to reflect on a season that was disappointing in result but promising to build on. If you feel like you've had that thought before about the Sharks, you aren't alone. But reflecting on ...
I sat down at my computer last night, excited to watch some hockey. It had been months since the last time I saw the puck drop. After a summer filled with horrible hockey occurrences, it was nice to see some hockey action. Unfortunately, it came in the form of a 6 - 1 drubbing of the Calgary Flames, from the San Jose Sharks at the rookie tournament. The Flames started o...
Being a Sharks fan requires a tough stomach. Every year, we watch our team fail when it should succeed. We follow every big trade Doug Wilson makes and consistently say 'Ah! We overpaid!' Sometimes those trades work(Thornton/Boyle), sometimes they don't(Campbell/Guerin/Heatley). We're hoping for the best with Havlat/Burns. We never land big free agents. These predic...
Training camp has started. Wait, that means hockey is right around the corner. Oh, thank God. I don't know if I can stomach any more baseball. Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson is no stranger to the trade market, and today we're going to look in to whether this has been for the better of the team or not and what to look for as the season progresses. Wilson has long ...

Ben Lovejoy is a likeable guy. That almost sounds like I am trying for a joke...but I'm not. Last night Lovejoy went awkwardly into the boards during a collision with a Sharks player and immediately you could tell something was wrong. Last night the Wild defeated the Sharks 2-1. The goals were scored by Koivu and Bouchard for the Wild, Joe Pavelski for the Sharks. The win makes it the third 5 game win streak for the Wild this year, and extends their lead over the Blackhawks and Penguins as first overall in the NHL to 3 points. But that is not what the story was last night. The story last night was the N...
Maybe this is a bad time to write this. I'm always pretty harsh on my Sharks, but sorting out my thoughts on them during a skid that has repeatedly exposed every flaw that this team has to offer is a terrible idea. I'm supposed to be thinking positive and productive thoughts, not coming down from a bender, weeping in my unlit apartment alone with no shirt and just a pai...
That was quite possibly the most embarrassing game I’ve ever seen. In fact, embarrassing isn’t a strong enough word. The Lightning were absolutely brutal tonight in a game that I considered to be one of the very key games this season. Why, why, why? How can a team come out so flat and give up so many goals in one period. A goal every 4 minutes for the Sharks? Tha...

Whats going on with the Washington Capitals? There’s a question I think every hockey fan and analyst are asking themselves these days, especially when you look at the southeast standings. The Florida Panthers have a four point lead over the Caps for the division lead, something I would think no hockey analyst would ever have guessed at the start of this campaign. Ovechki...
It's NIEMI time!! What else can I say. Niemi put on a show during the game. Stopping Tanguay on a breakway not once, but twice - along with many other stellar saves. I don't know about you but I am getting really tired of sports taking the fans for granted. If it wasn't for us there would be no money to fight over. We support the teams. We buy the jerseys. Next up is the San Jose Sharks Top 10 draft picks. While some of the Honorable Mentions are solid players today, they did not crack the Top 10 because they have had shorter careers relative to those in the Top 10. Gomez signed

Where is the sharks blogger on this? I like this signing as Gomez will fit on the 3rd line well and for the price (rumored 750K I think) its a good 1 year gamble. I have not seen much of his play as he was back east but his numbers are not bad and I don't see anyone else out there that can add to the sharks as much as Gomez can for this price.

Let's say, for arguments sake, that neither Thornton nor Marleau will be wearing a letter when the Sharks open the 2014-2015 season. Let's assume that they are 'passing the torch' to the younger players in the organization. Who gets the letters? Let's look at the real candidates, and there aren't many. Logan Couture Joe Pavelski Marc-Eduoard Vlasic Brent Burns ...
9 of 12. That's how many regular season away games the San Jose Sharks will be playing in the month of October. It's 11 of 14 if you include the final two pre-season games. For a team being forced to seek out a new identity, or any identity at all, it's not an easy start to a grueling 82-game campaign. With, presumably, new leadership guiding the ship, the Sharks ros...
Follow me on Twitter @DailyNHLGRIND A Glance Back I don’t think anybody could have predicted the outcome of the brutally nicknamed metro-terrible division last season. Columbus impressed while the Capitals faltered. The Penguins took a dip in the playoffs while the Rangers surprised many after a rough start. Other teams sort of slotted right into their right...

The San Jose Sharks have started the 2014-15 NHL season with a 4-2-1 start and are currently tied for second in the Pacific Division along with the Los Angeles Kings. I figure it's about time we review each game so far. Game 1: San Jose Sharks (0-0-0) at Los Angeles Kings (0-0-0) The Sharks started off their season against the team that ended their previous two, o...
FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER: https://twitter.com/DailyNHLGrind Semyon Varlamov. That was the beginning, middle, and end of this 65-minute story. The Avs lost their fourth overtime game of the season tonight by a 3-2 final. This one went all the way to the shootout. Despite the Sharks seemingly controlling the play for almost the entirety of the first two periods, the...
San Jose does not seem to be the Penguins favorite place. They lost their 12th straight game there Monday night, 2-1 in a shootout. They haven’t won there since 1997. Tommy Wingels scored in the eighth round of the shootout and Antti Niemi stopped Steve Downie to give the Sharks the win. Niemi played amazingly, saving 39 of 40 shots in regulation and stopping seven of...

The Sharks of Yesterday

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
Wow. This last season hey. It did not go well. The season never really got going after a seemingly good start (4-0-1) it went downhill from there but for a strong showing in December going into January. We had only three bad losing streaks. The one being a four match losing streak and the other two, three matches. So we did not have any really really bad runs. But there w...
I have no basis on these trades other than what I think should happen. I also believe it would make a very fun draft day. I will explain the bigger trades, some just don't really need explaining. Trade 1 Edmonton receives 3rd overall pick (Hanifin) 29th/30th pick (Chicago) 63rd overall pick (Arizona) Arizona receives Leon Draisaitl 16th overall pick (Pitts...
After the draft and a hectic beginning to free agency, teams are starting to settle in and we can get a better idea of what teams will look like going into training camp. The West once again looks ready to be the more impressive conference, with tough competition in both the Pacific and Central divisions. Today I want to focus on the Pacific Division. This year in particul...
To make the playoffs again, the Flames will have a have to compete in not only a tough division but also a tough conference. The Los Angeles Kings, Dallas Stars, San Jose Sharks and the Colorado Avalanche are all looking to get back into the playoffs after missing out last season. The Flames will have to beat them to have the best chance to make the playoffs. The Vancouver...
Let the California trip begin. First for the Columbus Blue Jackets is the San Jose Sharks in the Shark Tank (SAP Center). This is the first meeting between these teams this season, and what better way for each team to get a couple points by playing each other as they have not been hot as of late. The Sharks have only won 2 of their last 7 games where the Jackets have o...
Last night, the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the San Jose Sharks by a final score of 5-2 in the SAP Center, where the Sharks usually dominate teams. For San Jose, their captain scored both goals, putting Joe Pavelski at 8 goals this year. Other players that got points include Joe Thornton, Justin Braun, and Joonas Donskoi. My player to watch, Paul Martin, was a p...
The battle of fire is occurring tonight in Columbus as the red hot Blue Jackets battle the red hot and fatigued San José Sharks. The Sharks defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 last night without head coach Peter DeBoer. Columbus last played Thursday, and defeated Nashville 4-0. These two teams played earlier this month, with Columbus coming out on top in California. ...

CBJ- Solution Out There?

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
With my recent article of number one centers out there, a solution may have just appeared. Last week, rumors were out of center Tomas Hertl being available. The Sharks center was drafted 17th overall by this organization in 2012. Hertl has 26 points this year, and five away from the career high he had last year. He could end up with as much as 50 points this year, and that...
There was 30, and now there is 2. After the finish of the Conference Finals last night, the Stanley Cup Finals will be contested between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Jose Sharks. The Penguins have been riding a hot streak since the hiring of coach Mike Sullivan. General Jim Rutherford has made gutsy moves by adding Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, Carl Hagelin, Trevor ...
The Pittsburgh Penguins have done it. For the first time in seven years and the fourth time in 50 years, the Penguins won the Stanley Cup. The series was 4 games to 2. The San Jose Sharks made it farther they have ever gone in their franchise's 25 year century, to their first ever Stanley Cup Final appearance. The Penguins and Sharks had successful seasons to say t...
The second game of the season is at home for the Blue Jackets tonight where they take on the defending Western Conference Champions- the San Jose Sharks. The Sharks were really impressive last season make it so far to the Stanley Cup Finals, being two games short of their first ever Stanley Cup. Over the course of the offseason, the Sharks made a few changes, adding to...
The San Jose Sharks downed the Columbus Blue Jackets by the final score of 3-2 in regulation. The Sharks got two goals in the first period to make Columbus come back and battle later on in the game. Mikkel Boedker got his first goal as a Shark; Logan Couture and Brenden Dillon had the assists. Later on in the period, Joel Ward netted his first of the season. Brent Bu...
The final game of the season (Already) is happening tonight between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the San Jose Sharks, in the midst of their California trip. The Jackets are looking to rebound after a rough loss to the weaker Los Angeles Kings against the defending Western Conference Champions. The Sharks will look to get on top of the Pacific Division with a win, ...
The San Jose Sharks defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets by a final score of 3-1. The scoring started with early with Finnish winger Joonas Donskoi. The breakout from the playoffs netted his first goal of the season on the power play; the lone assist came from ex Devil and Coyote defenseman David Schlemko. In the final period, the Sharks got two goals from center Tomas H...
For more information follow @PesekWill and @NHLPenaltyBox {Twitter} The Islanders have played majority of their games at home to start the year, and based off their record from last year at home, it was kind of a disappointment to start this year at home. Now after only registering 1 point on the road this year, in a heartbreaking OT loss to the Florida Panthers, they t...

Secondary Woes?

Great to see the Oil get a convincing 5-2 win last night against the Arizona Coyotes; it helped calm the sea of fans screaming about the lack of secondary scoring as of late. The Oilers are 10th in the league in scoring even with players like Lucic, Nuge, Eberle, and Pouliot drastically underperforming. What's going on here? Let's break it down by looking at the Oilers...

Last Stop -- Teal Town?

I'll admit, I got a bit nervous as we moved toward the trade deadline, and Jerome Iginla was sitting there like low-hanging fruit, and just the kind the Sharks have enjoyed biting into in the past. It's hard not to notice how disproportionately San Jose has been used (or used itself?) as a way station for players either just past their prime, or a bit further along – ...
I need to say I'm confused lately about all the talk out there that the Sharks would be so much better off against the Oilers than the Ducks, Kings or any of the other hopefuls they might meet in round one. I don't know if people haven't been watching the Oilers in recent months, or if they didn't notice the last game the Sharks played against them, or if they're thin...

Time For Concern in Teal Town?

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
After four straight losses while being out-scored a collective 10-4, are we seeing a team that has not only taken its foot off the gas pedal, but climbed into the backseat? Or is this simply the same Sharks team we see near the end of almost every season, once their playoff berth is virtually assured? Brent Burns has noticeably cooled as teams are shutting down his lan...
If we’ve learned anything over the years, you never count out Getzlaf and Perry; and to the Ducks’ daunting d-corps, add in forwards the likes of Silfverberg, Rakell, and Eaves, and it’s only a matter of time until they start paddling – or is it swimming? – their way up the standings. I would expect no less of the Kings, although time is quickly running out on th...
The 2nd stop in “Big ‘D’” on the same road trip – rather than redeeming the Sharks – spelled only double-trouble, double the pain and double the shame. I’ll be posting a piece on Marc Edouard Vlasic soon and I’m going to have to pre-empt myself by suggesting that if the Sharks are going to play like this, they might as well let him rest up for the playoffs ...

After the last two games – giving up 13 goals while scoring only a couple – there’s really not much to say about the Sharks right now. I half-joked about bringing the Barracuda up en masse in my last post, but now I say, what can it hurt? I’ll be posting a piece on Marc Edouard Vlasic soon but I’m going to have to pre-empt myself by suggesting that if the Shar...
April 26, 2014, Marc-Edouard Vlasic left game five of the Stanley Cup playoffs after a Jarret Stoll hit, and the Sharks went on to lose that game and the next two against the Kings in a historic reverse sweep. Vlasic is no Brian Campbell or flashy P.K. Subban, pulling spin-o-ramas and skate-arounds; he’s no Shea Weber bombing from the point or Jacob Trouba running aro...
Recently, there has been many rumors that Kovalchuck will be returning to the NHL next season. The Devils GM Ray Shero has mentioned numerous times that he will make the best decision possible for the Devils to benefit from this situation. San Jose, Toronto, and St Louis are the most desired locations deemed by Kovalchuck. If Kovalchuck decides to stay in New Jersey this...

The Stanley Cup playoffs are in view and all the teams in the league are finalizing their rosters. As Sharks fans we remember the ups and downs of trade deals of the past. The prospect of doing nothing may be worrisome. The prospect of acquiring a player that turns out like Jannik Hansen may be worse. It’s no surprise that this time of year is difficult for all Sharks fa...
The most proven way for building a quality NHL roster while managing cap space effectively is through the draft. Drafted players are controlled for the longest period of time. A team's ability to draft NHL players through multiple rounds of the draft directly correlates to long term success. For this endeavor I took a look at every roster in the Pacific Division from t...
A few days ago, I predicted the sharks would miss the playoffs in 2019. I felt that Chicago would push up and have a comeback season after a disaster 2018 and that Colorado would have the other spot due to their young guys stepping up and Grubauer taking half the starts with Colorado's current starter Semyon Varlamov. But as off today, Multiple reports have said that th...

The Pacific Division Gives Thanks

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
Many hockey insiders believe American Thanksgiving to be the time of year where NHL General Managers sit down, take a hard look at their rosters, and evaluate where they are and where their season could be headed. Most teams have played roughly 20 games by this point, so by this time many GMs have developed a solid understanding of what is working for their club, and what ...
Toronto Boston was supposed to be the talked-about series the next day... was among fans of those teams, I'm certain, but much of the talk was amount the Sharks' 5 minute power play after their captain hit their head on the ice. I let this slide: I always thought passively that it was the right call, but on the wrong player, so whatever. Vegas is the team that couldn...
Just a few days past the Flames lost Captain and defensive rock Mark Giordano to a hamstring injury. Currently, he’s week to week so it’s hard to know when exactly he’ll be back and ready to go, but one thing for sure, is the Flames REALLY don’t need anyone else going down with an injury. Especially so close to the seasons end, with so many teams in the race for ...
The Calgary Flames have had hardly any help from their bottom six most of the season. Outside a couple contributors (Ryan/Dube) they haven’t had much, and to say it has been very concerning is an understatement. However, in the past two games that seems to be coming to an end. San Jose was pummeled 6-2 in their own building by the Calgary Flames Monday night, as the Fla...
SAN JOSE, CA - San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) interim General manager announced earlier today that the Sharks have signed North Bay Battalion forward Mitchell Russell.
